How long does it take for a new primary domain to become active?

So we currently have a live site in place and want to change the primary domain to a new domain.

primarydomainA.com - working now and very active

we want to switch to:

primarydomainB.com — currently redirected to primarydomainA in cloudflare.

To minimize downtime and issues - how long does it take for the primary domain update to take affect? is it seconds, minutes, hours?

We will want to:

1)switch primary domain to primarydomainB.com

  1. at the same time, remove redirects that exist currently from primarydomainB.com to primarydomainA.com

  2. Then will need to switch those redirects/setup new from primarydomainA.com to primarydomainB.com

All this needs to happen at once or hopefully asap to avoid downtime.

Is there anything I’m missing here? How long will it take for shopify new primary domain to kick in for everyone? Is it like DNS where it takes a while or is it fairly quick/immediate?

Does anyone know when I go in to change the primary domain, how long does that change take to be live? Is it like a DNS change where it takes hours/days or is it almost immediately? Thanks!
