How long does it take for Google to crawl redirected URLs on a new site?

Hi to all the community. I recently relaunched a new website migrating from Magento to Shopify. GSC shows around 20.000 pages with 404 problems. How does the url redirect tool in Shopify communicate with Google? If an old url magento page is redirected to the new shopify url, how long would it take to google to crawl and get the 404 page out of the list? does the new shopify url becomes part of the site map? after let say 500 redirects, would it be worth to submit a site map to google? To redirect 20.000 pages will take ages. Any suggestion as to how to move fast to get the job done? Would really appreciate guidance on this topic.

Thanks

Hi,Partylandpt

The URL redirect tool in Shopify helps you manage redirects from old Magento URLs to new Shopify URLs. When you set up a redirect in Shopify, it communicates with Google by sending the appropriate HTTP status code (typically a 301 redirect for permanent moves). This informs Google that the old URL has permanently moved to a new location.

The time it takes for Google to crawl and remove the old URL from its index can vary. It depends on various factors, such as the crawl frequency of your website, the authority of your domain, and the number of URLs Google needs to process. Generally, it may take several weeks to several months for Google to update its index and remove the 404 pages.

When you set up redirects in Shopify, the new Shopify URLs should automatically become part of your sitemap. Shopify generates a sitemap that includes the URLs of your products, collections, and other pages. This helps search engines discover and crawl your new URLs more efficiently.

If you have a large number of redirects, it may not be necessary to submit a new sitemap solely for the purpose of the redirects. Google should be able to follow the redirects and update its index gradually. However, if you have made significant changes to your website’s structure or content, submitting an updated sitemap to Google can help expedite the crawling and indexing process.

To set up URL redirects in Shopify, you can follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Shopify admin panel.

  2. From the Shopify admin dashboard, click on “Online Store” in the sidebar.

  3. Select “Navigation” or “URL Redirects” (depending on your Shopify version).

  4. In the URL Redirects section, click on the “Add URL redirect” button.

  5. In the “Redirect from” field, enter the old URL that you want to redirect from. This should be the URL of your old Magento page.

  6. In the “Redirect to” field, enter the new URL that you want to redirect to. This should be the corresponding URL of your new Shopify page.

  7. Choose the redirect type. Generally, a 301 redirect (permanent move) is recommended for SEO purposes.

  8. Click on the “Save redirect” button to create the URL redirect.

  9. Repeat this process for each old URL that needs to be redirected to a new URL in Shopify.

By setting up these URL redirects, visitors who try to access the old URLs will be automatically redirected to the corresponding new URLs on your Shopify website.

Dear Community member,

This is what I have been doing. But having around 18.600 4040, is there any
quicker method in redirecting to the new url?

After doing a thousand redirects, should I submit the site map?

Thank you for your help and guidance.

hello Eric,

thanks for sharing this information. I am wondering if there is also a way for us to expedite the process. Do you have an idea of how we can download all URLs from Magento, especially products and blogs?
