How many of your product images are invisible to Google right now? (Free audit inside)

Most Shopify merchants assume Google can see their product images. It can’t - not without alt text.

Google relies entirely on alt text to understand what an image shows. No alt text means the image gets skipped when Google decides what to rank in Image Search. Your products could have the best photos in your niche and still be invisible.

Here’s how to check right now: right-click any product image on your storefront → Inspect → look for alt="". If it’s blank or a raw filename, that image isn’t being read by Google at all.

Working across multiple client stores, I rarely found one where this wasn’t a widespread problem. The bigger the catalog, the worse it gets - and every new product upload quietly adds to the gap.

That’s what led me to build AltMaster - free to use. It bulk fixes your entire existing catalog and automatically picks up every new product you add, so the gap never comes back.

Run the audit and drop your result in the comments - genuinely curious how widespread this is.

Inspecting one image won’t tell you how widespread the issue is. I’d audit it this way today:

  • Export Products from Shopify and check the Image Alt Text column. Filter blank cells and filenames like IMG_1234.jpg.
  • Prioritize the main image for every active product first, then collection and variant images.
  • Write plain descriptions such as Blue linen shirt, front view, not a list of keywords. Keep decorative images at alt= for accessibility.
  • Check Search Console under Performance, Search type: Image, before and after changes.

One correction: missing alt text does not make an image completely invisible to Google. Google also uses page copy, filenames, structured data, and surrounding context. Alt text still matters for accessibility and gives Google clearer context.
