Hello! I’m browsing themes that will work for now and as we grow and I’m not sure what qualifies as a small inventory size, a medium inventory store or a large invenotry store. Does anyone know the number of products for each of these designations when choosing a theme?
Hey, @Kendra3
That’s a great question. There is no hard number per se on what differentiates one size from the other.
However, I would generally recommend small catalog optimized themes for merchants who are going to have less than a couple of dozen products. These themes are great because they are usually focused on being personable and using imagery to highlight your products in greater detail.
Medium sizes would be anything under 100 products, and these are typically a great balance between small and large optimized themes.
Whereas the large catalogs could be typically anything over 100products. Large catalogs themes typically optimize filtering options and ease of use in order for customers to sift through your product lines easier.
There is no definitive answer, I would recommend trying out a variety of themes to find one that suits how you want your brand to be presented and having the necessary features that you are looking for in a website.
I hope that helps! If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.
Agree with Dirk, the number of products isn’t as important as how your customers interact with your products. When choosing a theme for a large inventory, pay close attention to the theme’s…
- Search feature
- Collection pages
Search
This may sound obvious, but if you’re launching a store with a large collection, you need to make sure your theme offers amazing search functionality-- that means a prominent search bar on both mobile and desktop, but also search functionality behind the scenes. Some themes handle search results differently because there’s a lot to consider (product name, collection name, product tags, etc.) – be sure to think through the keywords and search terms your customers use and make sure the theme supports those use cases well.
Collections
If you have large collections, think through the customer experience here. When scrolling through a collections page, what is a better experience a) clicking “next page” to scroll more inventory (ie: Warehouse) or b) an ‘infinite scroll’ experience where more products are loaded as you scroll down (ie: Turbo)? If you ask me (or Instagram), infinite scroll is the better UX and Turbo beats other themes in this category.
Help your customers find your products quickly
It all boils down to how quickly you can help customers find what they’re looking for. If the experience is confusing or frustrating, you’ll lose your customer and they won’t come back.
