How new Shopify stores can boost visibility in AI recommendations

When AI engines like Perplexity or ChatGPT recommend local artists, they seem to pull from directories and press articles rather than individual Shopify stores. Is there anything we can do on the Shopify side to compensate for low domain authority for new stores?

Hi @Anavlis

To compensate for low domain authority, you must prove your Shopify store is the official hub for the artist mentioned in external press and directories.

Achieve this by implementing Store Profile schema on your store. Use the sameAs property within that schema to link directly to every directory, press mention, and social profile. This creates a verified data loop that signals your site is the authoritative source for the entity.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, very helpful!

@Anavlis low domain authority is not the main blocker for AI visibility. The gap is actually different.

Google uses domain authority as a ranking signal. AI engines are deciding whether your store is a credible entity worth citing in answers. Those are separate problems.

For new stores, the fastest ways to build AI entity credibility:

Get mentioned on indexed external sources. Even one feature in a niche blog, a gift guide, or a local press article starts building the entity association AI tools rely on. Reach out to bloggers in your niche. Look for gift guide roundups relevant to what you sell and pitch to be included. This matters more than anything on your store pages.

Make product descriptions answer questions, not just list specs. AI cites stores whose product content answers “what is this, who is it for, and why is it the best option.” Write each description as if a customer asked that directly in ChatGPT.

Check your llms.txt. Go to yourstore.com/llms.txt. Shopify auto-generates a basic version but it is often generic. If it does not describe your store’s category and use cases accurately, edit it in your Shopify admin. This file tells AI crawlers what your store is about.

Add complete Product and Organization schema. This gives AI engines a structured signal about what your store sells without having to guess from page text. Check your current schema using Google’s Rich Results Test.

For new stores the external mentions strategy is the highest-leverage move. On-site optimization helps but AI will not confidently cite a store it has never seen referenced anywhere else.

Thank you Rahul, appreciate your input!

Yeah, PieLab’s point on the sameAs schema is solid for closing the loop between external mentions and your store. Worth adding what comes before that though, for a new store with low domain authority, the sequence matters.

The sameAs approach works once external mentions exist to link to. The prior question is how to generate those mentions when you’re starting from zero and don’t have the domain authority that would naturally attract them.

What seems to work fastest for new stores specifically: niche directories and community mentions rather than trying to get editorial coverage immediately. Being listed in relevant directories (even modest ones), having someone mention you in a subreddit thread, appearing in a community roundup → these create the third-party signal the schema can then point to. The schema amplifies the signal; it doesn’t create it.

The other thing new stores can do that established ones often can’t: get mentioned in “new brands to watch” style content. There’s an audience for emerging stores in most niches and that coverage counts the same to an AI model as a two-year-old editorial mention would.

The visibility gap between new and established stores in AI is real but it’s not permanent. Models update their understanding as new citations accumulate, the lag is weeks to months, not years we’re actually victim to this as it stands.

AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini often rely on trustworthy sources or sources they understand well for example review platforms, market places, established publications. So new sites with less authority may have disadvantages in this. So the problem to solve is to build trust, brand identity or brand signals for AI engines to read, regconize and recommend in theirs future answers.

  • Strengthen your trust: improve your About page with clear and trustworthy contact information, social profiles and other strust signals to reinforce your brand identity
  • Use structured data: Organization, Product, Review, FAQs schema so search engines can better understand your business
  • Create content that goes beyond normal product pages, for example stories, behind the scence posts, FAQs, gift guides,…
  • Encourage reviews or user generated content

You can use some help such as SEOWILL (here) to better optimize your site with product pages, content and overall site struture so that AI engines can recognize, read easily and recommend your site.

Hope this helps !
