How should Shopify merchants in Pakistan handle NTN registration and tax compliance?

I recently launched a Shopify store targeting customers in Pakistan and I’m trying to understand the tax requirements for operating an online business. I’m confused about when NTN Registration Pakistan becomes necessary, whether a sole proprietor needs to register before accepting payments, and what the ongoing tax obligations are for Shopify store owners. I’ve read different information online regarding FBR requirements, income tax returns, and sales tax registration, but I haven’t found a clear answer specifically for Shopify merchants in Pakistan. If anyone here runs a Shopify business from Pakistan, I’d appreciate learning about your experience with tax compliance, the registration process, and any best practices for staying compliant while growing an online store.

If you’re operating a Shopify store from Pakistan, it’s generally a good idea to register for an NTN, especially if you’re running the business on an ongoing basis and receiving payments. While the exact requirements depend on your business structure, income, and whether you’re required to register for sales tax, having an NTN makes it easier to stay compliant with FBR requirements and file your annual tax returns. Since tax obligations can vary based on your situation, I’d also recommend consulting a local tax professional or accountant to ensure you’re meeting the correct registration and filing requirements. It can save you a lot of trouble as your business grows.

Hi @ramzantariq .

For NTN, get this first. It is your basic tax ID, free, and takes about 15 minutes on the FBR IRIS portal. Do it early since you’ll need it for a business bank account too.

For Sales tax, Only required once your yearly sales cross PKR 12.5 million. Below that, it is optional but can help you save tax on things you buy for resale.

For the new rule for 2026. Shopify itself now has to withhold tax from your payouts. If you are on FBR’s Active Taxpayer List, you get taxed at a lower rate 1%. If not, you get taxed more.

For an ongoing file, a yearly income tax return once you have your NTN. If you register for sales tax, you also file monthly.

Bottom line, get your NTN now, stay on the Active Taxpayer List, and register for sales tax once you are near PKR 12.5M in yearly sales.
