How to accept deposit on a order for custom product

I sell custom made products and sometime need to send a invoice to a client with a 50% deposit on the order. When we are ready to ship I need to have them pay the balance. Cant seem to find any way to do this?

@Keith-VS try draft orders for this process https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/orders/create-orders to collect the deposit.

Be sure to check the related notification templates as well to adjust the messaging.

There are also tools such as usemechanic that could be scripted to automate this process in 2 parts.

Or by editing orders https://tasks.mechanic.dev/demonstration-order-editing

With deposit processes keep in mind the capture window for credit cards is only 7~14 days depending on gateway.

Hi, @Keith-VS .

Thanks for posting to the community forums!

You can achieve a 50% deposit system by creating manual invoices. The only issue, is you would need to manually keep track of what orders have not yet been paid in full. To create a draft order:

  1. Login to your Shopify Admin
  2. Select Orders > Create Order
  3. Select Add Custom Product and state “Invoice” within the product for customer clarity.
  4. Price product to reflect 50% deposit
  5. Add customer information as well as order note stating invoice.

The customer will then be sent the invoice via email to pay. Once you are ready to fulfill the order you can send them a second invoice for the remaining balance.

Or, if you prefer a more structured, organized deposit system, you can use an app such as Deposits, Payments, & Pre-Orders. If you only require a few order deposits a month you would qualify for the free plan.

In the meantime, it sounds like you are selling custom products, is that right? I would love to hear more about your products to see what other support I can provide. What is your domain?

This was very helpful, as we do the same. We are in California. Do we charge tax on deposits?
