How to activate Google Consent Mode (V2) on Shopify

Hello, Google has just updated it’s Consent mode to V2 with a few new settings to control cookies.

Is there a standard solution from Shopify to activate Consent Mode. Google Consent Mode is nearly a requirement for proper privacy adherence and best available conversion tracking/attribution. So I would expect Shopify has something for it? I haven’t found it how ever. Not for version one, and version 2 is only just released, so I can imagine that is not yet availbe.

Hope someone has some insights into how to activate Google Consent mode on Shopify, without the need for yet another app :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers,

Vincent

I’m having the same issue. I’m hoping that the Shopify “Privacy & Compliance” app will be updated to include the new V2 requirements by Google. So far, Shopify support has not been helpful as they keep redirecting me to Google. And google redirects me to Shopify.

Hi @CustomLED

I invite you to try our solution which comes with many more integrations and options. I am sure you are aware that GDPR is not just having a banner that interacts with the platform but many more such as:

  • cookie policy with a detailed explanation of your tracking services

  • data subject requests management

  • consent reporting for auditing purposes

  • ways to optimize your acceptance rate

and many more!

Hi Nikos, there is always an app for everything, especially at Shopify. It would be nice to have such a major feature available out of the box for Shopify. Untill I found that out, I will consider your suggestion. Cheers

Hello Nikos, will the FREE version of your app satisfy Googles requirements for Consent Mode V2?

Hello @CustomLED the GCM is part of the integrations of our app and these are available only on the paid plans. We offer 7 days free trial to all our plans though so you can freely test this out.

Hi Vincent,

Shopify itself got a Cookiebar option. The customer service team of Shopify doesn’t know if it’s updated for Consent mode V2. Maybe someone here got some information from insider that it is?

Hi @Boubasman & @VincentNL

Shopify has extended the customer privacy options by injecting their native privacy app inside the store settings. But this does not cover all merchant needs and like other areas, the merchants will need an app from the app store. For example, Google Consent Mode is not supported as well as many other features we offer such as automated cookie policy, store scanning, data subject requests management, script blocking, integrations with other apps/services etc.

Thank you,

Nikos

Would be good if Shopify could let us know if there are any plans to make the Shopify cookie bar in ‘customer privacy’ work with GCM V2?

I’ve decided to activate the Pandectes banner, which includes Google Consent Mode V2. Works like a charm!

I still think this should be default Shopify functionality. But I guess they are being generous to the developer community and making their customers just pay for to much features that should be included.

The privacy & consent is a built-in feature found under Settings. As posted above, within 2 weeks, it should have the built-in consentmode v2 functionality. I found with any 3rd party cookie app, my Meta pixel and other marketing tracking stopped working properly and showed all my traffic as US traffic while the shop is EU-only. So it’s not an option for me to use 3rd party apps.

I’ll use that Pandectes app in the meantime as well. When the Shopify
Cookie app is good enough I’ll make the step.

Just chatted with support and they have no idea when this will be available. I hope you are right. As I would rather not pay for functionality that should come standard. And I like the Shopify native cookiebanner.

Same just activated mine. I have a banner in Google ads saying “You are not providing EEA end-user consent signals required for ad personalization features. Take action before March, 2024 or your campaign performance will be impacted.” hopefully it goes away.

I did too, just activated it today, before i just had the normal and old cookiebanner that only informs the customer, customer only could choose ‘OK’.

Do you use google tag manager ore do you import conversion from GA4. i am using GA4 import so i hope the pop up will dissapear for now…

Have to say that my campaigns are doing terrible since i got the pop-up

Do you mean the cookie banner “Customer Privacy” under “Settings”? That’s the regular one they are working on adding Consentmode v2 to. I asked them again today and they gave me the same answer “working on it”… but the more people ask them the better, so if you can I think everyone should ask through Support chat to put some emphasis on the urgency. March 6 is the deadline I understand.
