How to add a credit card form on checkout page with PayPal Express?

Hi!

I am currently testing my new Shopify store. The payment gateway was configured with PayPal Express.

When adding products to the cart and proceeding to Checkout, only the PayPal button is displayed.

I would like to also display a form for entering a credit card that will be processed with PayPal.

Please help!

Hi @eleibzon ,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I’m happy to provide some guidance with PayPal, to get this resolved. As PayPal is considered to be a third-party payment provider, customers will experience the checkout process differently than when checking out with Shopify Payments.

Currently there are two supported types of credit card providers: direct providers and external providers. If using a direct provider, customers can complete their purchase directly on your online store. Alternatively, if using an external provider customers will be directed to complete their purchase on a checkout page that’s hosted outside of your online store. I recommend checking out our Third-Party Payment Providers documentation for more information on this process.

When checking out with PayPal, customers will be prompted to input their information (i.e name, address, phone number, etc) and shipping details on your online shop, but will then directed to PayPal to complete the purchase. Payment details (i.e credit card information) are completed on PayPal directly to ensure the order is successfully placed.

If however, you’re not seeing this process as outlined above when completing a test payment please Contact Support to allow for further investigation.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns.

Hello Blair,

Thank you for the information but it does not answer my question. It is definitely possible with PayPal and does not require any other Third-Party Payment Providers.

Hi @eleibzon ,

Thank you for the prompt response. I’m happy to provide some further clarification to ensure this is resolved. As PayPal is a third-party payment provider the checkout process will be different from Shopify Payments. Due to this, credit card details would be entered on PayPal directly as opposed to within the online shop itself. This form and/or checkout process is expected behaviour for PayPal!

If however, I’m misunderstanding what you’re looking to achieve, could you please provide an example of this?

Take care.

Hi Blair,

Please see attached 2 screenshots from 2 different websites. I’m trying to achieve any one of these.

Hi @eleibzon ,

Thank you for the additional context and examples!

To successfully enable all accelerated checkout buttons, I recommend referring to our Accelerated Checkouts Documentation for detailed steps on how to complete this. For PayPal specifically, you will want to ensure it has been successfully set up. We have a great Setting Up PayPal documentation that touches on these steps, I recommend checking out.

If however, you have completed the set up for PayPal and are not seeing the accelerated checkout button appear during the first stage of the checkout process, it may be populating on the cart page instead. To get this correct, I would recommend Contacting Support to allow for our advisor team to investigate further.

Please let me know if you have any other concerns.

You can’t achieve this with Shopify’s checkout at present, which is very frustrating.

If you want a complete checkout experience with PayPal as your only payment gateway then you’d need to use BigCommerce instead of Shopify.
