I would like to add a free testimonials section to my website… I don’t want to use an app to slow down my speed.

Use Impluse Theme it has its inbuild testimonial section. Please refer to the below screenshot.
Or you can add this section using a custom code to your free theme.

I found a solution for Dawn as well-
I can actually also use the multicolumn section for testimonials and simply add the review start as emoji in the text. Worked like magic.
I’m happy you find the work around however was talking about below feature.
