How to apply 40% off first item & 60% off subsequent items?

Hello,

I am looking for a way to set up an automatic discount in my Shopify store. The discount should work as follows:

• 40% off the first item in the cart
• 60% off the second and all subsequent items

Is it possible to achieve this using Shopify’s built-in discount features, or do I need a third-party app? If an app is required, could you recommend one that supports this exact discount structure?

Shopify’s built-in automatic discounts don’t currently support tiered discounts like “40% off the first item, 60% off the rest.” However, you have a few options:

• Use a Discount App – Apps like Discount Ninja, Bulk Discounts Now, or Stackable Discounts allow you to create complex discount structures. You can set up rules for the first item vs. subsequent items.
• Workaround with Buy X, Get Y Discounts – A workaround is using Shopify’s Buy X, Get Y discount where the first item gets 40% off, and the second (or more) gets 60% off. However, this requires predefined product groups.

Here’s a screenshot of the configuration pane where you can set it to apply for cheapest / costliest / first X items in the cart.

There is no direct way to solve this through Shopify discounts as it doesn’t offer you this level of flexibility with your promotions.

Built this feature to solve for a merchant based in Turkey as it seems to be quite common for such offers in other parts of the world.

In the cart, the 40% discount is applied when just one item is added:
