How to apply different discounts to different items at checkout?

Topic summary

Users are seeking the ability to apply different preset discounts to individual line items during checkout in Shopify POS, rather than manually typing discount amounts for each item. This is particularly important for retailers running different promotions in-store versus online, or managing multiple sale racks with varying discount levels.

Current Limitations:

  • Shopify POS only allows one cart-level discount (automatic discounts or discount codes apply to entire orders)
  • Line item discounts must be manually entered for each product
  • Discounts cannot be stacked natively

Requested Feature:
A dropdown or quick-select menu to choose from preset discounts when applying line item discounts—similar to Square POS or Shopkeep functionality. Users shared screenshots showing the desired workflow where discounts can be selected directly on the checkout screen.

Workarounds Suggested:

  • Third-party apps like “Stackable Discounts” or “ConnectPOS” were recommended
  • Users report these don’t fully address the need and add expense

Business Impact:
Affects women’s clothing boutiques, building materials retailers, and other businesses with frequent sales. The manual process slows checkout and creates operational inefficiency.

Status:
Shopify staff acknowledged the feedback and committed to passing it to the development team. No timeline provided for implementation. Discussion remains open with multiple users expressing this as a critical POS feature gap.

Are we not able to apply diffrent discounts to diffrent items while checking out? Must we have to manually type in line item discounts every time if two diffren titems have two different discounts?

Greetings, @Kmart2400 .

Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!

I understand that you’re looking to apply multiple discounts to different items when customers have the qualifying items in their cart. While you can combine percentage and monetary discounts for line items using the Shopify POS and giving customers multiple discounts, it’s important to note that you can only apply one cart discount. Discounts like automatic discounts or discount codes applies to the entire order, therefore these types of discounts can’t be stacked.

That being said, if you really need to apply multiple discounts to the cart, then this is something that you can do through a third-party discount app. For example, Stackable Discounts allows you to stack discounts and this app is compatible with Shopify POS. If you need any help with a third-party app, the app developer is always available to assist you - you can reach out to them directly through the contact information found in the Support section of their app’s page.

I’d love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products do you sell? Do you need to stack discounts often? What other types of discounts do you offer (eg. BOGO)?

Thank you for your reply,

I did download Stackable Discounts and it’s not exactly what i was looking for. I just wanted to be able to line item discount individually and hit a button and choose a discount instead of manually typing a discount in for each item like you can do with Squre’s POS. That would be faster check outs and less manual work going into products and adjusting items for discounts. Sometimes we want diffrent prices online and in store. Maybe one day Shopify will update the POS for this everyday simple task for retail.

We are a women’s clothing boutique. We run discounts online and we can have sale racks in store with diffrent discounts and items not available online as well.

We also hope that Shopify will improve how this works. We have to do a lot of manual entry as well.

Hey, @Kmart2400 .

Thank you for following up and sharing the additional context!

I can see how being able to select discounts when applying discounts on line items can be a useful feature, such as using a preset of discounts or a way to access other discounts available in the store - this would be especially useful for stores that offer different prices/sales across different sales channels and this could help reduce some of the manual work involved in the process of discounting/adjusting line items.

That being said, I’d be happy to pass this feedback along to our development team for future considerations. If Shopify moves forward with any changes to how discounts are applied to line items (on the Shopify POS), then we’ll be sure to announce these updates and/or changes on the Shopify Changelog.

Since your store offers different types of sales, then are you using anything to interact with customers on your store (eg. Shopify Inbox)? Do you run any ad campaigns at the moment or do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?

Hi, @Noah_D .

Thank you for joining the thread!

I understand that you’re also looking for a way to improve the way discounting works on the Shopify POS and reduce the amount of manual entry involved with the process of adjusting/discount line items.

That being said, I was able to gather some context from @Kmart2400 and submit them as feedback to our development team - I’d be happy to do the same for you and add any additional details that you may want to provide as well.

I’d love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products do you sell? Did you get a chance to see whether something like Stackable Discounts can serve as an alternate solution for your store in the mean time?

Thank you for joining the thread.

I understand that being able to offer different pricing between sales channels is important to you, and I’d be happy to share this feedback as a feature request with our development team on your behalf. If Shopify moves forward with this feature, we’ll be sure to announce this on the Shopify Changelog.

That being said, I’d love to hear more about your business. What types of products are you selling? What does the pricing look like between your store and other sales channels?

@Elias We are trying to use shopify pos at a really huge scale right now and struggling with lot of Basic features missing , so we sell building materials , so kind of like home depot scale , would love to be a part of your pos beta testing team if you have something like that you cab reach me at rahul@buildmyplace.com

Yes!!! Something like this would be great. So we could click on the product that is on sale and add discount right on the same screen like shopkeep does. Instead of clicking the product, apply custom discount, type in discount, save. It’s a lot of steps! Here is a photo of what I am talking about that I WISH shopify could do!

Hi @Kmart2400 ,

If you’re struggling with applying different discounts to different items at checkout, ConnectPOS is a great solution. It offers multiple discount options like Buy X Get Y, automated discounts, so you don’t have to enter them manually each time. It’s available on the Shopify Marketplace, so you might want to check it out!

I also need access to a feature like this and am also transitioning from Shopkeep to Shopify. We do multiple discounts on a daily basis and need quick and easy access to adding discounts. In Shopkeep you can just click next to item and it drops down all of the preset discounts to choose from. I am also able to have the 2 or more of the same items and only discount one of them and keep other at full price. We also dont have a way to do our bulk items by weight. I have looked at every dicount app and none of them fill this need. These are all basic POS needs and we shouldnt have to pay for an app for these things. Shopify quickly gets expensive when you need to install an app for many basic POS needs
