How to Block a Customer / Fraudulent Purchases?

We’ve started to see a few customers coming to our site and purchasing unusually large quantities of select products. Most often they sign up for our subscription service to receive a discount on their purchase. Shopify has not flagged any of these purchases as fraudulent but they are suspicious. Based on our interactions with these consumers, we believe they’re not buying for themselves but rather to potentially resell (unauthorized resell).

What are some good options for blocking them from future purchases and/or flagging these as suspicious? I’ve seen similar conversations on this topic but they’re from a few years ago so I am wondering what improved options exist today.

There are a few ways you can do this including Shopify’s fraud filter which is just a basic rule-based system or you can use Shopify Flow which is also similar to fraud filter which provides a bit more customization than fraud filter.

If you need a dedicated blacklist system with a more sophisticated feature set, then you can take a look at our app, Beacon, which allows you to do things like hold orders and blacklist customers from creating a new account or using an old one.

The best thing to do in future is to set up a fraud detection tool like Disputify which not only begins to tracks and predicts repeat patten behaviour, but gives you an ‘Instaflag’ option.

What this means is that you have the ability to instaflag suspicious customers, or even customers who are known to be difficult, so that they are instantly flagged whenever they attempt to make a purchase. Using this function will also send you a notification as soon as they try to purchase anything.
