How to build inventory forecasting report?

Hi there,

I’m looking for guidance on how to find an inventory forecasting report.

I need to analyze past sales data to forecast demand accurately and determine the optimal reorder quantity to avoid losing sales.

Hi There,

Shopify has a “Sell-through rate by product” report that should be helpful.

If that’s not enough, our Report Toaster app can help. We have an entire set of inventory planning reports along with an inventory history feature. Please feel free to reach out to support if you need any help.

Hello @RobertCross ,

You can effectively build this report using Report Pundit. Please note that the forecast report can only be created based on past sales data, not past inventory.

If you can provide us with the parameters you use to forecast your inventory, we can build this report for you.

Cheers!

Hello @RobertCross,

This is Andrii from Mipler: Advanced Reports and I’m excited to connect with you here!

I noticed that you have a topic that hasn’t been marked as solved and I believe our application could help.

I would like to take a moment to share with you an article that our Mipler team authored regarding how you can prevent out-of-stock for trending products, reduce excess inventory, and identify dead stock in a timely manner.

Best of all, this article contains a ready-made and completely free Google Sheets template, with the formulas already customized. So all you need to do is just paste the reports from Shopify into our template and get a ready-made forecast for your inventory.

Here’s what it looks like on the demo data, click on the images to zoom in.

  • Sheet 1 - simple view, everything in one place:

  • Sheet 2 - the same report with detailed calculations:

Kindly find below an article here: [LINK]

There you can find all the definition including how to set up and use the template developed by our experts.

Direct link to the template: [URL]

I hope you find both the article and the template helpful.

Wow!

This template was very helpful to me!

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

If you want to be able to analyse inventory history for more than the Shopify limit of 90 days, I recommend checking out my app Inventory History Guardian, which records the inventory level of each product variant at each of your business’ locations every day. You can also create inventory adjustments directly in the app, which will update Shopify’s inventory while allowing you to add custom notes and reasons for the changes (like damage, theft, or expiry).
All of the data is easily exportable to CSV so you can use the template that @Andrii_Mipler created

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey there! :waving_hand:

I totally understand how challenging inventory forecasting can be. You might want to check out Orlio - it analyzes past sales data (up to 1 year) to accurately forecast demand and helps automatically determine the optimal reorder quantities, so you don’t miss out on sales.

It also sends low inventory and out-of-stock alerts, which can be super helpful. Plus, it’s great for managing multiple locations if that’s something you need.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Looks like you’ve already got good guidance above on the manual approach (exporting sales data by SKU, calculating velocity, factoring in lead time for reorder points). That works, but wanted to add a bit on the automation side since it can save a lot of the spreadsheet wrangling once your catalog grows.

Full disclosure, I’m the developer of Opti Forecast AI, so take this as a biased recommendation — but a few things that might be useful to know if you’re weighing the speed and accuracy of spreadsheets vs. an app:

  • Opti looks back across your full historical sales data automatically, rather than you manually exporting and reshaping CSVs every time you want an updated forecast. Make sure your download or app does this to ensure it can accurately forecast seasonal trends.
  • Projections run up to 24 months out, built on a statistical baseline (trend + seasonality detection), so you’re not just extrapolating a flat average.
  • You can ask our AI questions in plain language about your own data and projections — e.g. “how would a 20% price increase on this SKU affect reorder timing” — and it adjusts the forecast based on your conversation, instead of you rebuilding formulas by hand
  • Forecasts are broken out at the SKU/variant level, with CSV export if you still want to do further analysis outside the app

The free plan lets you test it against your actual store data before paying anything, so it’s an easy way to compare against the manual method and see if it’s worth the switch. Happy to answer questions if you give it a try — and worth comparing against Assisty or Inventory Planner too, since the right fit depends on your catalog size and how much automation vs. control you want.
