This solution may not be suitable for most, it does require knowledge of Javascript but it is now possible to achieve this using a workaround with Shopify Flow.
Converting tags to metafields using Shopify flow
Topic summary
The discussion addresses bulk exporting and importing product metafields in Shopify, particularly with Shopify 2.0.
Initial Solutions (Pre-2024):
- Users recommended the Matrixify app as the primary third-party solution
- Required setting up metafield definitions in Shopify Admin â Settings â Metafields first
- Metafield columns only appeared in exports if at least one product had values assigned
- Matrixify supported new metafield types and definitions
Community Frustrations:
- Multiple users expressed frustration that native Shopify product exports excluded metafield data
- Merchants questioned why they needed paid third-party apps for basic data extraction
- Some users reported issues with specific metafield types (e.g., image metafields, âList of valuesâ types)
Resolution (Summer 2024):
- Shopify officially added native bulk export/import functionality for product metafields
- No apps or workarounds now required
- However, limitations persist: âList of valuesâ type metafields reportedly donât export properly
- Users note lack of clear documentation about feature limitations
The thread reflects an evolution from app-dependent workarounds to native functionality, though some metafield types remain problematic.
Shopify has finally added bulk export and import of product metafields in the Summer 2024 update. No need for apps or workarounds now.
Great news, but are there any limitations we should be aware off? For example is there limited amount of metafields imports a day?
There should be no limitations.
Doesnât seem to export metafields with the Single line text â âList of valuesâ type, the column doesnât appear.
Agree. I can get access to Boolean type metafields - but no âList of valuesâ type metafields. A really stupid limitation if its intentional.
What is most irritating about Shopify is that they partly enable features but provide no documentation that helps you decide if you want to use that functionality because of limitations. You implement an option ASSUMING that once you put date into their system youâll be able to get it out - and then you canât. And then you waste hours trying to figure out WHY you canât do something that seems eminently sensible. AAAAAAARGGGGHHHHHH
