How to change VAT/Sales Tax amount per stock location

Topic summary

Goal: Configure VAT (value-added tax) per stock location after migrating from Magento to Shopify, with B2B logic tied to customer location and VAT numbers.

Requirements:

  • UK customers: see only UK stock; pay UK VAT on that stock.
  • Austrian customers: see UK and AT stock; no tax on UK stock; VAT on AT stock.
  • Other EU customers: see both stocks; no tax on UK stock; VAT on AT stock unless a valid EU VAT number is provided (reverse charge), then no tax.
  • Non-EU customers: see both stocks; no tax on either stock.

Platform context: Store is on Shopify Basic; considering Shopify Markets and possibly upgrading to Advanced to achieve this behavior. Seeking an app-based solution if native features fall short.

Latest update: One reply asserts Shopify cannot do anything close to these requirements, implying Markets/Advanced or apps may not meet the needed per-location tax logic and VAT validation flow.

Status: Unresolved/ongoing. No concrete solution, alternatives, or action items identified; key question remains whether any app or configuration can support this setup.

Hi,

Hopefully I’m asking this in the correct place…

So we’re trying to figure out if there’s an app that will allow us to carry this function out.

So basically there are two stock locations; one in the UK and one in Austria (AT). This is business to business.

The UK customers only see the UK stock and will pay (VAT) tax on that.

The Austrian customers see both the UK stock and the AT stock. They pay no tax on the UK stock, but need to pay (VAT) tax on the AT stock.

EU customers see both stocks and don’t pay tax on the UK stock, but pay tax on the AT stock, if they don’t have a valid VAT number. If they have a valid number then they don’t pay tax.

Non-EU customers see both stocks and don’t pay tax on either stock.

The existing site is in Magento, but is getting moved over to Shopify and is currently on the basic package. I was looking at Shopify Markets, but can’t get a clear picture on whether that would allow us to do this, if we had the advanced package.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
