How to charge manual / variable sales tax? (TN single article tax rate)

Topic summary

A Tennessee jewelry store owner needs to implement the state’s Single Article Tax rate for items over $1,600.

Tax Structure:

  • Items under $1,600: 7% state + 2.25% local tax
  • $1,600-$3,200: 7% state + 2.75% special rate (replaces local rate on amount over $1,600)
  • Over $3,200: 7% state tax only

Problem: The owner seeks an app or solution to automatically calculate this tiered tax at checkout, similar to how major retailers like Nordstrom handle it.

Suggested Solutions:

  • Tax calculation apps exist but are reportedly expensive for a single-state need
  • Alternative workaround: Use “surcharge” or “upcharge” apps to add the variable tax as a line item, though this wouldn’t display as actual tax in the bill

Status: No definitive solution identified; remains an open question for affordable implementation.

In Tennessee there is a special Single Article Tax rate for any single item purchase above 1600.

Basically, for anything above 1600 but below 3200 the local rate of 2.25% that applies to any amount below 1600 disappears, but a special 2.75% state rate applies on that amount over 1600 up to 3200. After 3200, only the 7% sales tax (which applies to any amount in addition to any special or local rates) remains.

I am trying to figure out how to set up a special TN rate as we have a fine jewelry store and often sell items above 1600. Does anyone know of any app I could use that would allow me to apply this single article tax rate correctly so that TN customers are charged the right tax rate and it appears in the check out normally?

I can see that any big company such as Nordstroms applies the correct TN single tax rate rate for high price items, but I am guessing they had their developers code a special tax calculator for their site.

Thanks so much in advance for any info! Will

Yes, unfortunately these are just very expensive when all I need is the one solution for Tennessee tax caculations only

Use surcharge and upcharge term in app store
What they will do is add x% on order as product name → like .. service fee, royalty tax etc …

This is the only cheap way but it will not shown in bill cuz these as tax included as product.
