How to charge only state tax in Illinois?

Topic summary

Issue: Store is set to charge only Illinois state tax at 6.25%, but checkout is still adding county and city taxes, pushing totals above 8%. The goal is to restrict tax to state-only.

Attempted solution: Configure a tax override in Shopify (Online Store → Settings → Taxes → Tax overrides → Add tax) for Illinois at 6.25%. This was implemented.

Current outcome: Despite the override, local (county/city) taxes continue to be applied. A screenshot was provided to illustrate the unexpected tax breakdown (image is central to showing the problem).

Additional reports: Another user confirms experiencing the same behavior and asks if a fix was found.

We’ve set up our taxes for select states, including Illinois for 6.25%. However, we’re charging customers city and county tax too, in addition to state tax. Sometimes, the total tax amount ends up being charged over 8%. Is there a way to only charge state tax?

Hello @avani121 ,

You can try to set up the state tax only in your store setting:

  • Go to Online Store → Setting → Taxes
  • Go to Tax overrides → Add tax
  • Enter the state name and rate (in your case, Illinois and 6.25%) for the state tax.
  • Save

Hope this can help. Let me know if you have any further questions.
