How to create a 100% off promotion for 2 items in a list without buying anything

Hi,
we want to create a promotion on Shopify Plus Markets as follows:

  • max 1 use per customer
  • 2 articles out of a list to be FULLY (100% off) discounted
  • the tricky part: the customer can buy something else or not → it must be possible that the customer only “buys” 2 free items
  • shipping costs are not discounted
  • it can be with a promocode or automatic, not a big deal

It is similar to a BOGOF, but without the minimum condition of buying 1 article full price.

Can we natively or with some app achieve this result?

Thanks

Hi @Michidoni :waving_hand: mechanic automation app can do this using the draft order system for the online-store cart
https://tasks.mechanic.dev/create-a-draft-order-from-the-cart

Otherwise sounds like a custom shopify-function( PLUS stores checkout-scripts feature is defunct)

Reach out if you need either of those paths developed.

Max 1 user per customer is possible

Buy 2 free item can also work

Shipping condition also you can create without discount

Just need clarity on Article price.. rest buying 1 article condition can also get implemented

2 article out of list to be fully 100% off- need clarity here from your end once. @Michidoni

Note: agreed with @PaulNewton point of view..

Hi @shopify-dev
thanks for your feedback.

I think we are close to the solution but still not there.

If I create a Amount off products discount and then I set it as Percentage off (so to use 100%) I don’t have the option Only apply discount once per order, which would indeed be perfect.
This option is only available if I select to indicate an Amount off, but since we work with Markets and different currencies this is not the ideal solution.

See screenshot

Any hint on how to overcome this?

Thanks

It’s an aislop answer your responding to , if you reach only for what you want to hear then find out it’s fatally flawed how could you ever trust a follow up. yeeeesh.

Previously on actually solving complicated discount schemes tv:

Shopify’s base features can’t do everything.

Native Shopify discounts won’t get you there — the Buy X Get Y setup always requires a minimum qualifying purchase in the “Customer Buys” condition, so a pure “get 2 free, no purchase needed” checkout isn’t possible out of the box.

The right tool for this is a free gift app. BOGOS is the one I’d try first for this use case — it lets you auto-add specific products to the cart with 100% off, with no purchase condition required, and supports per-customer usage limits. You can define the eligible product list and cap it at 2 items. The customer pays shipping only, which is exactly what you’re describing.

A few things worth confirming when you set it up: make sure the discount is applied as a line item discount (not a cart-level percentage) so it doesn’t accidentally touch shipping, and test the “max uses per customer” logic in a draft order before going live — some apps are flaky on that enforcement depending on whether customers are logged in or checking out as guest.

Hi @PaulNewton ,

thanks for your input.
I don’t totally understand the issue here: I was presented with a potential native solution which I was not able to replicate, and I was wondering if the issue was on my side.

Thanks for your suggestions though: it’s not the path we had in mind but we’ll consider it.

Thanks,

I had already checked with BOGOS customer support but they mentioned they don’t offer a similar solution without minimum purchase.

It’s a pity because the simple setting Only apply discount once per order would fix it for good,if only it would work on % discount and not only on Amount discount.

 Hi @Michidoni, I’m Ellie from BOGOS team.

First, I sincerely apologize. Our support team misunderstood your request and provided incorrect info.

I’m happy to clarify that the BOGOS app can do what you’re looking for in this purchase flow:

  • When customers visit your store, a popup will show up and let them pick 2 free products from your list.

Note: You can embed this pop-up into your cart page or contact our support to embed it into your cart drawer if you want.

  • After selecting, they can go to checkout and only pay for shipping (even if they have only 2 free products)

Here’s how to set this up:

  1. Gift offer > “Spend X amount to get gifts” template
  2. Set min cart value = 0 and apply to any products → Customers can either buy products or just take the 2 free products.

  1. To limit 1 use/person, add a sub-condition named “Customers’ order history” and set the number of uses per customer = 1.

  1. Set the number of free products they can get (e.g: 2)
  2. Select products you want customers to choose from

Note:

  • customers have to log in to verify whether they’ve claimed the offer or not.
  • turn off fraud protection rules in Settings, as the app may block orders that only include gifts. We recommend you contact our support team to let them help you do it.

If you have any questions, I’m willing to help.

Finally, so sorry for our misinformation :< That’s truly our mistake.

Best regards,

Ellie from BOGOS

Thanks @Ellie-BOGOS ,
I have just installed BOGOS and configured the offer as you suggested.

Two more questions on my side:

  1. Can we somewhere indicate in which market (we work with Shopify Plus Markets) the offer is active or not?
  2. Instead of initiating the experience via popup, is there a chance to link the offer to a promocode?
It will be our responsibility to share the code or create a Shopify link with redirect + promocode in it. This is the execution we have in mind.

Thanks so far!
Michele

Hi @Michidoni  Sorry for my late reply due to its weekend.

Regarding your questions:

Can we somewhere indicate in which market (we work with Shopify Plus Markets) the offer is active or not?

Yes, you can. Just add a “Markets” sub-condition and select the markets you want. The offer will only run in those markets.

You can also enable “Exclude” if you want to exclude specific ones.

If you want to redirect customers to:

  • checkout page, it won’t work directly because customers must have something in their carts to check out (due to Shopify rules).

  • your store with an auto-applied promocode, the gift would need to be fixed (customers won’t be able to choose from a list).

Recommended flow:
Customers buy something → go to checkout → enter your promo code → a widget appears for them to choose gifts from your list (using Checkout Upsell by BOGOS app).

 Let me know if you’d like help setting this up. I’ll reply as soon as possible!

Ellie

Hi @Ellie-BOGOS ,
thanks for your feedback.

  1. Markets: noted!

  2. Redirection: our goal is to redirect to the sample pages (where customers can choose 2 of them) with the promocode already applied
So this structure of shareable link: yourstore.com/discount/PROMOCODE?redirect=/your-path

If we could have the promo working with promocode instead of the popup (or on top of the popup in case) it would be ideal.

Thanks
Michele

Hi @Michidoni , thanks for clarifying. I fully understand your case now.

And YES!

What you want is doable using the Volume Discount feature, still from BOGOS app.

How it works:

  • Customers access your store via a special link
  • They are redirected to your sample collection page
  • They don’t have to buy anything and can choose 2 samples across your collection
  • 2 samples added to cart are automatically free

Example:

How to set it up:

  1. Create a collection page including all your samples
  2. Create offer > Discount > Volume Discount
  3. Fill in basic information
  4. Select your sample collection & “Count different products”

  1. Add subcondition “Markets” to apply discount for specific markets, and “Specific Link Address” to generate a special link (customers can only claim the discount when they access via this link)

  1. Set up 2 discount tiers like below. This way, customers can freely pick 2 free samples from your collection page. If they add to cart more, the 3-rd one will be at full price.

  1. Enter your promo code here again

^^ I think it’s the flow you want. If you need any help, feel free to ask me <3

Ellie

Hi @Michidoni ,

Your requirement can be met using the the Dollarlabs Ultimate Discounts app.

  • You can set usage limits per customer and per code
  • You can set the limit on how many quantity of items from the list get 100% off
  • Yes, you can set it up in both ways, either the customer has to buy something else or just apply the discount code to get 2 quantity of items for free.
  • You can set this up to be either automatic or manual

Here, I recorded a quick loom video to show you how this will work.

Here’s a screenshot of the config in the discount in case you don’t want to run through the video.

Happy to help further if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Hi @Ellie-BOGOS ,
we are very close to the solution, but still not 100% the execution we’d wish (we can be picky, right? )

It all works correct - including markets segmentation - until:

  • If I add 2 samples → 100% discount on both (PERFECT!)

  • If I add 3 samples → 0% discount on all (NOT IDEAL)

Is there a way to get 100% on 2 samples and 0% on the 3rd (and 4th, 5th etc) sample added to cart?

    That would really solve it.

    Thanks
    Michele

Hi @Michidoni  Don’t worry, my dear! You’re not being picky, and BOGOS has you covered.

I’ve talked with our developers, and we’ve decided to add this feature:

Once enabled, customers will get:

  • 100% off the first 2 samples

  • 0% off any additional samples (3rd, 4th, 5th, etc.) (the first 2 samples are still free)

 This feature is live now. Feel free to test it <3

Hi @Ellie-BOGOS ,
we’re finalizing the tests but it appears to be working as we expected. A massive THANK YOU for the support and the development.

Great great customer care. I hope that this solution will help more customers out there

 Thank you so much, it’s my pleasure
