I’m creating a product with “Home & Garden > Lawn & Garden > Gardening > Pots & Planters” as category. This category has two metafields, Color and Material. My product’s variants are based by color and size. I can create a variant option “Color” and assign it to the metafield “Color” without any issue, the colors are shown properly.
But, I can NOT assign the variant option “Size” to anything else than the already created metafield “Material”. I created object metafields, metaobjects, variant metafields… nothing shows up there to connect with the variant option. They only show at the bottom of the product page for me to fill with information, not to connect with any variant option. I hope I’m explaining myself.
How can I create a custom category metafield or how can I connect a “meta-something” to the variant option? I’ve seen some similar issues in the forum but no answer seems to provide a solution for this case. If there’s a solution already posted please forgive me and I’ll have a look to it.

Understanding the Metafield and Variant Challenge
It seems you’re encountering a limitation in Shopify’s current metafield and variant system. While you can easily associate variant options with metafields for color, it’s less straightforward for size.
Potential Workarounds and Considerations:
Leverage Existing Metafield:
Utilize “Material” Metafield: If the “Material” metafield is flexible enough, you could use it to categorize sizes as well. For instance, you might have options like “Small Ceramic,” “Medium Ceramic,” “Large Ceramic,” etc.
Consider a Text-Based Approach: Within the “Material” metafield, you could use a text-based approach to specify size, such as “Small,” “Medium,” or “Large.”
Explore Third-Party Apps:
Advanced Product Options: Certain third-party apps can provide more flexibility in customizing product options and metafields. These apps might allow you to create custom metafields and associate them with variant options.
Do Thorough Research: Before choosing a third-party app, carefully evaluate its features, pricing, and compatibility with your specific needs.
Shopify’s Future Developments:
Stay Updated: Keep an eye on Shopify’s updates and feature releases. They might introduce new functionalities in the future that could address your specific requirements.
Provide Feedback: Share your feedback with Shopify through their support channels or community forums. This can help them prioritize features that are important to merchants like you.
Thank you for your answer. I’ve considered option 1 already, but this is just a temporary solution. What if I need another color instead? or what if I use another material? The possibilities are limitless… Why even in the first place is there this limitation? It does not make any sense…
About option 2, I’m a developer so I don’t mind looking into the code, so if there’s a third party app that can do it, it means it can be done, do you or anyone know how to add it modifying the code? Any reference or example would do. Can your app, PageFly, do it? I’ll consider installing it.
Option 3, yeah, seems we have no other solution right now. Quite disappointing, why would Shopify think they’ve already provided all the available combinations of options for a category? Maybe I’m just misunderstanding the concept of metafields and this is not the use case they are designed for, but they provide default metafields to link to options, so I guess I’m not that far to the real concept of them…
