How to create Template Page for Newsletter so I can link URL on social media

Topic summary

A user with the Retina theme is trying to create a dedicated newsletter signup page with a shareable URL for social media, rather than relying on existing popups or footer forms.

The Problem:

  • The “Create new Template” button that previously existed in the Pages dropdown has disappeared
  • The user has legacy templates from the old interface but cannot replicate the process
  • New options like “Metaobject Templates” appear overly complex for this straightforward need

Desired Workflow:

  1. Create a new page template
  2. Add a newsletter signup form to that template
  3. Link the template to a new page
  4. Obtain a URL to share on social media

Current Status:
A community member (Guleria) suggests the issue stems from using an outdated theme that doesn’t support Shopify 2.0 features, making it difficult to add newsletter sections to new templates. The original poster has requested confirmation that updating the theme will restore the “Create New Template” functionality, along with screenshot evidence of the updated workflow.

Resolution: Pending clarification on whether theme update resolves the issue or if MetaObjects are now required.

I have the Retina Theme (though not yet updated to latest version).

I am trying to do something that should be extremely simple and straight forward, but which I am finding very difficult and confusing:

The Goal:
I want to be able to share a direct URL to my Newsletter sign up, specifically for social media so I can drop a link directing viewers to enter their email to get shop updates to their inboxes.
To be clear: I do not want to generate a Newsletter pop-up on my page, or just direct them to my entire website landing page, where an email sign up already exists above my footer.

I’ve assumed the best (the only?) way to do so was to create a new Page and from there, park a new email sign up template. I cannot figure out how to easily create a new Template, let alone input the Newsletter sign up, or link that to a Page that lives on my website.
This used to be very simple and Shopify’s new UX makes it seem impossible.
It’s both dumbed down and over complicated simultaneously, and I no longer understand how to quickly help myself customize my website.

I only have the option now for “Metaobject Templates” and this is beyond complex and confusing for my needs.
Within the Pages dropdown, there used to exist a button for “+Create new Template” that is now gone. (See red scribble showing where this used to live).
I have existing Templates from the old UX that are linked to Pages and therefore live on my website, but there is no path forward now to just follow this same process…

Can someone please walk me through this step by step - for what I can only imagine is a very common use case for linking newsletter sign up? Why is this so difficult?

How do I:

  • Create a New Template →
  • Apply Newsletter Sign Up insert into said Template →
  • Internally link new Template to a new Page →
  • Place new Page on my website so I can grab the URL to share on Social Media

Thank you!

Hello @hudsonc ,

The steps you shared in the screenshots are completely correct.

But I think if you are using an outdated theme which does not support shopify 2.0 features then it’s hard for you to use a signup/newsletter section in the newly created template.

Hi Guleria,

Thank you!
Can you confirm that if I update my theme, my Create a New Template button will re-appear and likewise, i’ll be able to make a Newsletter sign up page? Can you please reply with screenshots demonstrating this? Or will I be forced to work within MetaObjects regardless?
