How to delete express checkout Paypal? Checkout page

Hey!

I am seeing lots of people not convert because they think that only Paypal is available. They see the paypal express checkout button first when landing on the checkout page.

I want to remove this to see if my conversion would go up.

Is this possible? Or is there any other way to tell my customer that they need to fill in there address before they see all the payment options?

Thanks a lot!!

Hi Brentyy!

This is Peter, from Shopify Support. I understand you have a question about the possibility of turning off your Accelerated Checkouts, incl. Paypal. Let’s take a look at that together!

Essentially, different checkout options are available for different payment methods, all of which can be offered at certain points in the checkout process. These payment methods (Apple Pay, PayPal, etc.) take over the checkout process from our checkout, including address information etc. For that reason, these quick checkouts are given at the beginning of the checkout process, as they eliminate all the other information the customer has to fill in at the Shopify checkout.

In other words, you have three different options for customer checkouts:

  1. (Normal) Checkout: This is the checkout supported by all payment methods, and is the only checkout available for some payment methods. For payment cards, such as Visa and Mastercard credit cards for example, customers must always go through this checkout, and data such as address details must be provided every time.

  2. Accelerated Checkout: As the name suggests, these checkout methods make the process was faster, as customers do not have to fill in all the information themselves. Most of the information is already stored with the payment provider itself, and the customer only needs to log in (often automatically), make a few payment choices, and confirm. Examples of this kind of provider of accelerated payment methods include Paypal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Shop pay.

You can choose which of these fast methods you want to offer to your customers, by ticking them in your Shopify Payment settings:

You can turn PayPal off in a similar way, by going to Settings > Payments, and click “manage” next to PayPal (please note, my example does not have PayPal installed, as it’s an internal test store):

The important thing here is that your shop will always only give your customers the options that are available. So for example, if the customer is shopping on a Samsung phone, they will never see the Apple Pay option, as it is only available on Apple devices.

  3. Dynamic Checkout: many of the Accelerated Checkout providers further have the option to add a Dynamic Checkout button on your product page. This thus skips the entire shopping cart, and sends your customer straight to payment for that one product. For some shops, this is a very nice solution, while other shops again want to encourage their customers to buy more than one product at a time. This very much depends on the retailer’s preference and the expected buying behaviour of their customers.

As for your options, as far as I can see, you also have three.

  • you can disable PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay, as Accelerated and Dynamic checkouts are the only way these are offered to customers. This obviously does remove these payment methods, but does avoid potential confusion for customers.

  • You can leave it as it is. These accelerated checkout buttons are known to have a positive effect on customer conversion, as they speed up the buying experience, and every second faster has an impact on your customers’ buying behaviour.

  • You can choose to keep the accelerated checkout buttons, but show them in the shopping cart. These can be transferred to the shopping cart using a fairly simple tweak in the code. So this requires an adjustment to be made in the code. Unfortunately, we cannot do this for you. If you do want to do this, I would recommend looking at our Shopify Expert Marketplace, to see if you can find an expert who can help you a bit more with this process. These can be agencies or individual experts in a very wide range of areas. So you may be able to find someone here who can give practical advice on how to shape this part of your business most effectively. Before you do, it’s a good idea to read through this page, which explains how best to make use of this marketplace.

Of course, you yourself are in the best position to decide which option is best in your situation. If by far the majority of your sales are by e.g. iDEAL (which is often the case with Dutch retailers), removing these payment methods may not have a negative impact on your conversion rate.

Finally, it is also valuable to point out that this situation will resolve itself in the near future! This is because we are currently busy finalising our One Page Checkout, where all checkout steps will be shown on one page. Customers can then more easily see which payment methods you all offer, and if they use PayPal, Apple Pay, etc, can just use the quick checkout buttons to avoid having to fill in all the address info etc. No exact date has been set yet for the introduction of OnePage Checkout, but you if you scroll down this page, you can enter your email address to request early access.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to let us know!

Warm wishes,

I agree that you should try by removing that nice yellow PayPal express button from the top of the checkout page to see if it will really improve the conversion. You can try PayRules: Hide Payment Methods app to hide the Paypal Express button. After installing the app, go to the Add Rule page and enable the toggle to Hide of the PayPal Express Checkout field like the screenshot below.

That’s it. Now your customers should not see the PayPal express button in the checkout page.
