I research and found a few apps but they were quite expensive.

I understand you want an app or code snippet for your store that shows the amount of products recently sold. There is a huge selection of “urgency” apps available in the app store, depending on the look and feel you are going for. One I recommend having a look at is: TimexBar Stock Countdown. Using the keyword “urgency” will bring up lots of options.
The post title here does note you are looking for a “Fake” countdown timer. I need to ensure you recognize that urgency based sales tactics need to be valid and true at all times. Under Shopify’s Acceptable Use Policy, you may not deceive or mislead customers when marketing products.
Claims about the popularity and availability of a product should be clear and accurate. Examples of tactics which could be deceptive or misleading if the claims are inaccurate or false, include the following marketing tactics:
- limited stock notifications, such as "only items left”
- countdown timers, such as “only hours left”
- claims about how many people bought a particular product, such as “ people bought this product today”
