I’m trying to enable Google Customer Reviews surveys (the post-purchase opt-in popup) for my Shopify store, but I’m running into an issue with the integration instructions.
Google Merchant Center tells me to add the survey opt-in script to the order confirmation page using code like this:
However Shopify has removed the Additional Scripts field and does not allow scripts on the checkout or order status page anymore for non-Plus stores.
Because of that, the integration instructions from Google seem impossible to follow.
Current setup
• Shopify store (non-Plus plan)
• Google & YouTube app installed
• Merchant Center connected and active
• Google Customer Reviews program enabled in Merchant Center
• Store quality score shows Great
But the Google & YouTube Shopify app does not show any option to enable the Customer Reviews survey, and I cannot manually add the script to checkout. I’m specifically trying to enable the Google survey opt-in after checkout, not third-party review platforms.
Hi, I have recently seen a similar thread. They marked one of the comments as a solution to configuration. Idk, maybe it will be helpful for you as well:
The issue is due to Shopify, shopify doesn’t allow popups in the checkout, while Google requires a popup to ask the user permission to send emails.
That is why the code will not work when you install it in customer events. And that is why the only way to get this to work, is with an app, that directs the user to a 3rd party website to ask permission.
So if you don’t want to use any app, there is currently no solution.
If you do want to use an app, there is a solution. Alternatively, use a different review system, but that too will require a different app.
You’re actually not doing anything wrong. The problem is that this integration is no longer possible the way Google documents it for most Shopify stores.
The Google Customer Reviews survey requires adding a script to the order confirmation page. Google’s instructions say to insert the script on that page so the opt-in popup appears after a customer completes checkout.
However, Shopify has recently removed the Additional Scripts section and no longer allows custom scripts on checkout or the order status page for non-Plus stores. Because of this restriction, there’s currently no way to manually add the Google survey script on a standard Shopify plan.
Even if your Google Merchant Center account is fully set up and the Google & YouTube app is connected, the survey still can’t be enabled because the required script cannot be placed on the checkout page.
At the moment, the only real options are:
Upgrade to Shopify Plus, where checkout extensions can be used.
Use a third-party review platform that integrates with Google.
Wait for Shopify or the Google & YouTube app to add native support for the Customer Reviews survey.

These apps basically add the Google survey to the order confirmation page using Shopify’s new checkout extension system and connect it with your Google Merchant Center account.
If you’re just looking for something simple, Easy Google Customer Reviews is usually the easiest to set up.
