How to exchange products in an order, without having to send money back and forth

Hi guys

Shopify support told me that if a customer wants to exchange the size of a product (get a shirt in size M instead of S), then I need to issue a refund and the customers needs to make a new order.

I cannot believe that this is true, there must be another way.

What I found out is that I can issue a return (without doing a refund), and then add the correct product to the already-existing order and applying a 100%-discount to the new order.

Is this the correct way to handle this kind of situation? Will it not mess up any statistics regarding revenues, sold quanitites, discounts or anything like that?

I’m super confused that there is not an official Shopify article that outlines this process.. This seems like an everyday task for the majority of all Shopify stores.

Thanks, Tobias

Did you try editing the order, e.g. add the correct item and remove the wrong item? If the order is not fulfilled, it can be changed.

Hi there

Thanks for your answer.

I’m talking about orders that the customer has already received. Which means the order was already sent out and fulfilled and therefore the products can’t be removed anymore.

Did you ever get an answer to this or do you have to process the way you described above?

Didn’t get any further info. Ever since, I’ve just been refunding the product, so that it goes out of the order, and then archiving that order. Then creating a new order, while applying a 100% discount. Still didn’t see an official info regarding if this is the best or the correct way, but probably it is.

I’m having the same problem, it’s ridiculous that this isn’t a native feature for Shopify. This must also be an issue for thousands of other Shopify stores too. Extremely frustrating
