How to exclude all but the 1st variant from Merchant Center?

Hi everyone!
I’m currently connecting Shopify to Google Merchant Center and I’d like only the first variant of each product to appear in Merchant Center.

Is there a way to prevent the other variants from being sent to Merchant Center in the first place, by adjusting something in Shopify, Google Merchant Center feed rules, supplemental feeds, or other native tools (without using paid third-party apps)?

As a workaround, I’ve added a custom label in Shopify to identify the first variant of each product. That label is now visible in Merchant Center, so I could potentially use it to create a rule to exclude the rest — but I’m not sure of the best approach.

Any ideas or tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You can manually exclude them by disabling them / unpublish them in your app.

You can also remove them from showing in Google Merchant Center by going to GMC > products > click on the product > uncheck the box to show on Google.

Or check multiple products using the checkbox, and set the visibility to don’t show.

Or change the app to multifeeds which has a built in feature to automate this: Multifeed Google Shopping Feed - Multi currency/language feeds for Google, Facebook, Bing &more | Shopify App Store

Hi @EmmanuelFlossie , thank you for your answer!!!

”You can manually exclude them by disabling them / unpublish them in your app.”
I believe this can only be done in shopify at the product level, not variant level. So it’s either all variants or no variants at all. Right?

”You can also remove them from showing in Google Merchant Center by going to GMC > products > click on the product > uncheck the box to show on Google.”
Can I do this automatically? I tried with attribute rules (excluded_destination) but failed:

Thanks again!

Alos… How do you manage sizing? I mean… in GMC one product for every size is created for each t-shirt design. Do you leave all of those products visible in Google listings or should I chose one size and hide the others? Thanks!

I’m not sure if you can exclude per variant in the Google and youtube app, I don’t use it, but check the app options, if you can’t exclude specific products, then you are right.

You can setup rules, as long as the rule can work. I would not know how you can identify variants this way. Considering there is no specific identifier between the variants.

Yes, I submit all variants for clients I manage.
