How to fix strange collections URL issue for SEO

Hi There,

We sell genuine DNA tested Egyptian cotton sheets and now rank for Egyptian cotton. However, the top ranked page is a collection that doesn’t actually exist…

https://www.thehotelsheet.co.nz/collections/hotel-sheets-collection/egyptian-cotton

1. How/why does this URL exist?

The hotel-sheets-collection exists but the egyptian-cotton page on the end that renders isn’t a collection or a page - we have proper collections for Egyptian cotton so don’t understand how this URL even renders?

2. How do we fix?

Besides wanting to be in control of all pages on our site, we also want to control the heading. Our actual Egyptian cotton collections have proper keywords in the heading like ‘Egyptian’ ‘DNA Tested’ etc. Notice how the collection title of ‘All Hotel Bed Sheets NZ’ renders?

This is incorrect and confusing. Here’s our proper Egyptian Cotton collection for reference: https://www.thehotelsheet.co.nz/collections/egyptian-cotton-sheets-dna-tested

Obviously we can permanently redirect to the proper Egyptian cotton collection but want to understand understand how/why non-existent URLs even render?

Any info/help would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Ben

OK, so after more digging and moving the tab to a page with longer tabs, I can see in the page title that this page is being generated from a tag (see attached). However, you’ll notice that we don’t have tags enabled on the page that renders but obviously Google has found the URL from a tag.

So if we want our top Egyptian Cotton page to be an actual collection page where we can control the title and the description, what’s the best way to tell Google it should use the Egyptian cotton collection instead of the tag?

A 301 redirect? If so, we’re just worried that if we start to use tags, we’ll forget about the redirect!
