Intermittent browser warning “Error Certificate Common Name Invalid” appears for some visitors to a Shopify-hosted site (domain originally with GoDaddy), while others access it normally.
Diagnosis: The warning relates to the SSL certificate (HTTPS). It can stem from links pointing to non‑Shopify pages or DNS misconfiguration causing a hostname mismatch with the certificate. The site’s SSL is issued, but DNS for the ‘www’ host showed issues.
Findings: External check indicated an unnecessary A record on ‘www’ and a mispointed CNAME. Advisor recommended keeping only the apex A record and setting ‘www’ CNAME to shops.myshopify.com. Screenshots were shared to illustrate SSL status and DNS records.
Next steps: If customers still see the SSL error after the DNS change, contact Shopify Support for further troubleshooting.
Domain management: Merchant asked about transferring the domain to Shopify. Advisor suggested keeping it with GoDaddy for flexibility; transfer is possible (help link provided).
Status: Likely addressed; awaiting confirmation from visitor reports.
I was wondering if someone could help me, I’ve had my website for a round 2 years now, originally with go daddy then transferred to shopify.
I’ve had a few customers over the last few days when they go to my website they get a message saying my website is unsafe and comes up with this error.
That is an error message associated with your SSL certificate.
This can happen if you’re linking customers to a part of your website that isn’t on Shopify.
It can also happen if your site doesn’t have an SSL certificate activated. That doesn’t seem to be the case though, as when I go to your website, I do see an SSL certificate issued.
Your ‘www’ version of the site has an a-record (which shouldn’t be there) – you should only have the single a-record for the main domain (without the ‘www’). Also, your CNAME record for ‘www’ should be changed to “shops.myshopify.com”.
If you make the above changes, it should hopefully resolve the issue with your customers seeing issues with the SSL certificate. If customers keep reporting that issue, after making the above changes to your DNS records, then you’d want to reach out to Shopify’s support team directly, for further help troubleshooting.
I’ve just gone onto the DNS records and tried to find the records that you’ve mentioned, but when I go there the other A record isn’t there and there’s heaps of other records ? sorry I’m not a very tech savvy person.
It is possible, but I would recommend keeping your domain with GoDaddy (that’s who I have all of my own domains through). If you ever leave Shopify, then you won’t need to transfer the domain again. There’s absolutely no harm in keeping the domain with GoDaddy.
