How to get/retrieve a list of connected payments methods/providers/gateways for the shop?

My question is about payment methods/providers/gateways.
Can I somehow programmaticaly get the list of connected payment methods for the shop? For example, make an API call to get the list. Is it possible?

Can I first ask you what kind of Extension are you working on (Theme, checkout, post-checkout) ? Every extension has it’s specific optimal ways to access data.
