I have been reading the forums trying to determine the best practice for handling discontinued or obsolete products. As a retailer, this happens 50-100 times a year and we would like to develop a simple and effective procedure to handle this on Shopify.
Is the best practice to:
- Allow consumers to land on the specific product page they were searching with the option of clicking a link to the current model or
- Is it best to implement a redirect so the consumer is immediately directed to the current model?
One of the solutions I read about and liked was to create a new theme template such as products.discontinued however I do not have the technical capability. The simplest solution I am considering is to add text to the product description that states, “This product has been discontinued, please click here to view the current model.” My only issue with this solution is I would need to disable the ‘add to cart’ button and remove ‘email when back in stock’ app for products such as this and do not know how.
Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions.
