How to make clear shop pay is for credit cards?

I have Shop Pay set up on my site, and it works fine if people try to use it. I get a number of calls from customers asking how to pay with a credit card. I tell them to click the Shop Pay link and they’re like “ooh, OK I didn’t realize that’s how to use a card on your site”. I worry about the customers who give up because they’re unfamiliar with Shop Pay and don’t realize that’s how to use a credit card on our site. I know this is costing me business. Is there a way to add either Visa / MC logos or at least some text that explains Shop Pay is how you pay with a credit card? I use the Minimal theme.

Hi @AAAAAutomotive

If you have Shop Pay enabled on your store then customers should be able to enter credit card details as normal at the checkout, even if they don’t use the Shop Pay accelerated checkout.

Do you have Shopify Payments enabled on your store? If yes, then there is a section to add credit card information during the checkout flow.

Hi Shay,

I do have Shopify payments (Shop Pay, right?) enabled and if customers can figure out that Shop Pay means pay with a credit card everything works. Trouble is many customers are looking for a Visa or MC logo (like the Paypal, Apple Pay and Google Pay logo’s that are shown already) so they know what to click if they want to pay with a credit card. What is shown is the ShopPay logo, which many customers don’t understand means pay with a credit card.

It sounds like you have all the major options for payment enabled on your store, meaning customers can checkout with any method they are comfortable and familiar with, not just Shop Pay. Now if you are wanting to lean into Shop Pay as the preferred checkout option, I can definitely understand that.

Where did you want to add messaging on your store about Shop Pay? “Shop Pay” is an accelerated checkout like Google Pay, Apple Pay and PayPal, and like those accelerated checkouts all major credit cards are accepted. Is the concern that the Shop Pay logo is not as recognizable as Google Pay or Apple Pay?

Some of my customers have told me they want to pay with a credit card, but don’t see a way to do so. Shop Pay will allow them to do that, but my customers have told me that they didn’t realize that Shop Pay is how to pay with a credit card. What would be great would be if we could add small Visa MC Amex logos below the Shop Pay button so it is clear that Shop Pay is how you pay with a credit card. Please understand, many of my customers are older people who don’t understand the concept of accelerated payment. If they don’t have Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal they don’t understand how they can check out with a credit card. I’ve seen these logos on other e-commerce sites so I am hoping they can be added to my site.

Thank you for that additional information.

Do you have your payment options enabled in your theme so that the icons appear in your footer? You should be able to find that in your theme editor under Footer > Show Payment Icons.

If you can share a screenshot of where you would like the icons to go outside of that I can see if I can assist you in creating a placement for it. Some apps do also offer the ability to embed icons in various pages of the store as well.

Edit::

Also, you can remove the accelerated checkout button from the product pages as well. They will still show as available once the customer has entered the checkout, but if you find the accelerated checkout prompts on the product pages aren’t helping it might be something to consider.

Sure, there are 2: the cart page and the checkout page. Please see attached screenshots. If I have Paypal, Amazon Pay, Google Pay, Meta Pay or Venmo it’s self explanatory. What if I want to pay with a Visa or MasterCard or AMEX? I personally understand that I can click Shop Pay to use a credit card, but my customers are looking for a Visa / MC / AMEX logo or at least a “Pay by credit card” button. They don’t see it, only Shop Pay. If they don’t know what Shop Pay is, they get confused.

Something like this would be perfect. Click any of the credit card logos and it takes you to the same place the Shop Pay button does. We still would use Shop Pay, just add a button (see screenshot) that makes it obvious that this is how you pay with a credit card.

Thank you very much for the screenshots! The option to pay by credit card is still built into the checkout flow and customers would see that option on the last stage of the checkout, which is the standard method most customers use when buying online. Shop Pay is just the accelerated version of the checkout, but is not the only way to checkout with a credit card. Customers do not have to click the Shop Pay icon in order to pay with a credit card. They can just continue with the checkout as normal and will see a field to enter their credit card details on the last page of the checkout.

From the screenshots it looks like you may be using an older (vintage) theme style. This means that the additional images you want to add will have to be coded into the theme. If you are using a newer version of our themes then you can quickly add additional images or content from within the theme editor itself.
