How to manage Dawn theme slideshow issues on Shopify?

I’m new to using shopify themes and I’m running into some issues right off the bat, especially with the slideshow component.

  1. I would like to know the image size for a full width slide. ( or the ratio)

  2. I can see the option to add slides, but not to delete them…I can only turn them on or off. I’ experimenting with slide images and I don’t want to have dozens of slides in the drop down.

  3. I’ve selected sticky header but the menu/ header does not scroll with the page

Hey, @kirkcanada .

Thank you for reaching out and posting these questions!

I understand that you’re experiencing some issues with your theme. While I wasn’t able to access your store (bleswold.myshopify.com) as it is currently password protected, I’d be happy to continue assisting you and reply using numbered points as well.

  1. There isn’t a specific recommended image size or aspect ratio, as the themes use responsive images. Responsive images are images that respond to the size of screen on which they are being displayed, so the high-res images will be just right regardless of the device. If you need help determining the best image size/aspect ratio for your store, then I’d recommend taking a look at our suggestions in the Best practices for slideshows, image banners, and full-width images.

  2. You can remove the slides completely after selecting the slide, then simply clicking “Remove block” on the bottom-right side of the theme editor.

  3. I wasn’t able to replicate the issue with the sticky header on my test store. However, it’s worth noting that the sticky header (for the Dawn theme) only shows as the customer scrolls up on the page and remains hidden when scrolling downwards.

That being said, it looks like you’re selling consumable products, which is awesome. Have you considered offering a loyalty program to incentivize frequent buyers? Or, perhaps interacting with customers on your store using something, like Shopify Inbox?

Elias,

First thank you for a linear and detailed response to my questions. I really appreciate the time it took you to compile your answer.

In any other theme/builder/WP page I have used, the sticky always follows the scroll. If it doesn’t, it’s not “sticky”:).

While applying your answer, I did not see the options to delete the slide block, but found that by selecting the slide I was able to delete it in this manner:

I have another question, what is the maximum number of slides you can add? I seem to be stuck at 5.

Cheers

Hey, @kirkcanada .

Thank you for following up!

I can totally see where you’re coming from, as traditionally sticky headers have always stayed on the page and moved along with the scrolling. However, this new style of sticky headers is more akin to what browsers are doing today on devices, like the iPhone, iPad, or Android, where the header is hidden to provide a full viewing/reading experience as you scroll down the page.

That being said, while modifying the sticky header isn’t something that’s supported by our design policy, it is possible to modify the coding to achieve this effect or by trying a different theme with sticky headers. If you’re not comfortable working with coding (eg. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Liquid), then you can consider hiring a developer to customize your theme. If you need help finding a developer, then a great place to look is on Shopify Experts.

Selecting a different image or hiding a slide can be a good solution. However, in the event that you do need to remove a slide, then it looks like the Remove block is on the left side for your device - just under the Change image and Remove image. This is likely due to the different displays/resolutions that we’re both using when viewing the theme editor.

The total number of slides can sometimes vary, as this depends on the theme you’re using. For the Dawn theme, the maximum number is 5 slides. If you’d like to increase the number of slides, then this might be something that our Theme Support team can look into for you. However, your store would need to be subscribed to a plan in order to be eligible for the complimentary design time included with the subscription. While we’re not able to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community at this time, we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat, email, or callback. Please visit the Shopify Help Center and log in to your account to create a support request.

Is your store subscribed to a plan? Also, did you get a chance to try any other themes?

Elias,

Thanks again for the detailed and informative reply. You’ve given me a lot to think about!
