Hiya, I am just in the process of moving my small business over from etsy. I am not great with this side of things and have been putting it off and I am so close to giving up already!
I am struggling with setting the quantities of my variants, I will have this issue with around 80% of my listings so quite important. It is rather hard to explain so I hope I make sense
I sell made to order items so I can have 10 of 1 item in stock yet the variations are the colour/ style/ quote etc but I do not want a quantity on all the variations. It seems through shopify that 10 in stock across 3 variations gives me 30 variations to state stock on. I simply want a drop down for the colour and quote without the quantity needed as the quantity is purely on the style. Hope this makes sense as I am confusing myself!
On Etsy I have been doing it without issues. Iām losing the will to live, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Happy to help. What I believe you are looking for is known as āconnected inventoryā. This is when you have a parent product (Letās say a mug) that has various design options (sparkles, red, blue, orange). Essentially you donāt want the variant design options to be tied to an inventory count. Rather you would like the parent product (the Mug) to have a set inventory number. And whether the customer chooses sparkles or a red design, you want the inventory to be reduced from the parent product (mug).
If so, you can use an app called Connected Inventory by InsCoder Limited to accomplish this. This app is used by many merchants like yourself who sell variations of products that consume one physical quantity. Feel free to utilize their free trial for 7-days before deciding if their paid app is right for you.

Thankyou for the reply Dirk, I have found the app you said and have started the free trial. However it doesnāt seem to be very straight forward nor can I get it work for my variations? Iām shocked it isnāt a standard feature on shopify as in all honesty it isnāt a difficult ask. It is so hard to explain but if I explain here maybe you could tell me of Iām wasting my time as the connected inventory thing isnāt letting me do what I want.
I make & sell shelf decor blocks mainly, so a dinosaur block comes in 3 colours to choose from and each dinosaur topper has different quantities eg. 2 stegosaurus, 3 triceratops, 1 pterodactyl etc depending on my stock.
I also have football blocks which can have 3 different toppers (toppers have different quantities) and you can personalise with your name. Some products have more than 2 variations and a personalisation.
Please tell me if Iām wasting my time as I do not want the trial to run out and I have to pay when itās not something I will be using.
Iām trying to make the leap from Etsy as their fees are just too much now but I thought this was going to be more straight forward ??ā
