How to "monitor" a Shopify expert's movement on my Shopify dashboard

Hello Shopify community, I just recently hired an expert company a few weeks ago. I paid $1100 for a website design and $308 for the monthly SEO marketing.

First let me just say, I supposedly hired a Shopify expert from the US, but it turns out they are from India. (Very frustrated about that). I noticed a lot of these experts are from India or from other countries claiming to be from the US.

I really need to know, if the expert does not promise to do their tasks on their end of the deal, am I allowed to get a full refund? I am a little hesitant to continue the job due to some communication level, at the same time, I don’t want to misjudge the expert and turn down a great opportunity.

I would also like to monitor every movement of this expert on what they edited in my store, as well as the time it was edited. Is this possible to do?

So far there hasn’t been any major changes to my website and now I am getting close to the point on closing the job and getting all my money back.

Has anyone experience something like this and got the results they paid for?

Did you pay for an expert that did not do the job that you paid for, and were you able to file a dispute against them?

Are there experts that are located here in the US only here on Shopify?

Thanks!

@Zachia – sorry about your experience.

There really is no way to monitor every step they take. You should tailor the permissions to what they actually need access to, and you get a list of the timestamps when they logged in. That’s about it.

When it comes to the theme files, you can make regular backups of your theme code (“Actions” > “Download theme”). You can then diff the contents, to see what modifications were made. We do that in our development process too and like to use Git to keep track of modifications, which you could use too if you feel comfortable with it. As an added bonus, you get a file history.

When it comes to other modifications – that’s really not easy to detect, unless you document them yourselves … which of course nobody does.

If I were you, I would ask for a detailed written description of what the expert did. That way you should be able to get some sort of idea, if their work was legit.

Unfortunately, I don’t know about the billing and control mechanisms, as we don’t bill through the Shopify system, due to incompatibilities with our local tax requirements.

Hello @r8r thank you for giving me that insight. I contacted the company this morning and we got into a disagreement and a misunderstanding about how professional I want my store to look. I paid these guys $1100 for a store design and $308 for SEO marketing. This company is called The Visiontech. They say there are in Boston but are actually in India.

The way the design looks is not professional and realistic looking. We got into a little debate on how I wanted it to look. I recorded the Skype call, and what he told me is that his team copied the image of my product’s photos and pasted on lifestyle images making it look cheesy and unattractive. This also got me wondering why he said he needed full permission to my store instead of just the theme and other permission. At first I did commented that I liked it when he showed me through skype message but then I took a closer look when I went to the preview store section on the website, and it just doesn’t look well at all.

He told me he was confused, and that this is what I asked for for the initial start up. This is true however, I expected a better and realistic looking design than that. I gave him some examples of how I want my store to look. clockcanvas.com and magnoliabox.com. If you look at their website and their landing pages, you can see how attractive and professional looking it is. Mine does not look anything like that.

I told Kevin the owner that I was handling the product descriptions and gallery myself so his team doesn’t have to worry about that.

The only thing I liked about the website is the Footer of the page. They did a good job on that.

I sent him an email on what I want done exactly, so that we are both clear on the project. If this doesn’t go well on both our ends, I will have to find a new SEO and web design expert. I paid too much money for my website to look professional.

If this was really the case that he can’t work with the project I want done, I could have done this myself. I needed to save time so I hired a company to do the design for me.

These photos that I uploaded, his team just copied and pasted.
