We would like to offer product recommendations.
My understanding is that we can offer an associated collection against a product…
but we want to add a specific product by colour variant to another product by colour variant…any ideas?

It’s a great idea to offer product recommendations, as it will almost certainly encourage more sales!
If you’re using a Shopify free theme you can add a product recommendations section that displays an automatically-generated list of product recommendations.
The product recommendations that display in the section are based on products that are commonly purchased together or products in related collections. Product recommendations become more accurate over time as more order and product information becomes available.
Here is more about the Product Recommendations algorithm. You’ll find plenty of information about the requirements and limitations, the UI guidelines, and how to track recommendations. While the algorithm cannot be edited, it does develop and evolve as more customers interact with your store.
Of course, if you really wanted to suggest very specific collections or products you could always hyperlink them in the product descriptions! So it would look something like this:

Of course, you can highlight the product as much as you like on your own product page, making it more or less noticeable by editing the font format or color!
