We have a deal so if someone buys a specific machine (X), the get free shipping on one accessory for that machine (Y). Customers would still pay shipping for X, but shipping for Y will be free. If they add Z to their cart, they will also be charged shipping for Z.
Is there a way that will allow us to set free shipping for a specific item but only if they buy another specific item? We’ve tried adding that accessory as a variant or using our bundle app to offer that, but we want to explore other options that won’t confuse people.
If we upgrade to Shopify Advanced, will we have those options easier to implement?
Hi thewriteux,
Yes, you can set up conditional free shipping for specific items in Shopify, but it may require some advanced features or custom coding. Here are a few approaches to achieve this:
1. Shopify Scripts (Requires Shopify Plus):- Shopify Scripts allows you to create custom scripts that can apply discounts and conditional logic to your cart. With Scripts, you can set a rule that offers free shipping for item Y if item X is in the cart. However, Shopify Scripts is only available on the Shopify Plus plan.
2. Third-Party Apps:- There are third-party apps available on the Shopify App Store that can help you create more complex shipping rules. Apps like “Advanced Shipping Rules” or “Better Shipping” might provide the functionality you need to set conditional free shipping.
3. Manual Discount Codes:- You can create a discount code that offers free shipping for item Y. Inform your customers that they need to enter this code at checkout if they purchase item X. This approach might not be as seamless, but it is a workaround without needing advanced plans or custom coding.
4. Custom Development:- If you have access to a developer, you can create a custom solution using Shopify’s API. This would involve creating a script that checks the cart contents and applies free shipping to item Y if item X is present. This is a more flexible solution but requires technical expertise.
5. Upgrading to Shopify Advanced:- Upgrading to Shopify Advanced provides more flexibility with shipping settings and may make it easier to implement these rules through custom scripts or by using advanced features and third-party apps more effectively.
Suggested Steps:1. Explore Third-Party Apps: Before upgrading, check if a third-party app meets your needs.
- Consult with a Developer: If you prefer a seamless experience, consulting with a developer for a custom solution might be the best approach.
- Consider Shopify Plus: If your business can benefit from other features of Shopify Plus, such as Scripts, it might be worth the investment.

If you upgrade to Shopify (annual subscription and have the third-party carrier calculated service (CCS) activated in your store) or Shopify Advanced, we might be able to help you configure this with our app, JsRates. If we can identify the products “X” and accessories “Y” with properties, such as, tags or sku, we can setup the free shipping rules for you. The app has a free demo plan - you will upgrade to paid plan after we setup and tested the rates. If you are keen, install the app and reach out via the “Contact support” in the app.
Hello, you can set free shipping for a specific item but only if they buy another specific item using the ShipRight app in any Shopify plan. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the app and click the “Add a new rule” button.
- Click “Add a new condition” and select the “Products” option.
- Choose “Hide if not found”, then add both products in the “Products” field.
- Enter your free shipping option (e.g., “Free shipping”) in the “Additional shipping methods” field.
- Finally, click the “Save” button.
That’s it! Now, the free shipping option will only be available when both related products are in the cart.
