I added a third party domain (Godaddy) and then removed it. Now my custom domain will not revert back to its website.
Hello @jeff92688
After removing a domain, its IP mapping is still cached in DNS for a period of time. It will be back to normal after a day or two.
Hi @jeff92688
Welcome to the Shopify Community!
I understand that you have added a custom domain to your Shopify store, but have since removed it and noticed that the domain is not reverting back to its previous setup - is that correct?
The first thing to establish is whether you connected the GoDaddy domain, or actually transferred the domain into Shopify? Connecting means you simply change the DNS settings of the domain to point towards your Shopify store, whereas transferring involves migrating the domain away from GoDaddy and managing it inside of your Shopify store.
As @ZenoPageBuilder has mentioned, any changes to domains such as DNS edits can take anywhere up to 48 hours to fully propagate across the internet. This is a limitation of how domains work on the internet, and is not specific to just Shopify.
If you had connected the domain and want to remove it, then all you need to do is the following:
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains.
- Click the name of the domain that you want to remove.
- Click Delete domain.
- Click Remove again to confirm.
- Keep in mind that if the third-party domain is your primary domain, then you need to change your primary domain before you can remove it.
- You can then change the DNS settings on GoDaddy to whatever setup you wish.
If you had transferred the domain into Shopify, and wish to revert back to GoDaddy then the process is a little bit more complicated, but certainly easily achievable. You can follow this guide here which explains how to transfer your Shopify-managed domain to another domain provider.
May I ask why you have decided to remove the domain from your Shopify store? Are you planning on moving away from Shopify completely, or just maybe making some domain changes? Feel free to ask any other questions you have, and myself or others in the Community can try our best to help.
