How to remove or edit old domain names in Shopify?

Topic summary

A user transferred their domain to Shopify but noticed their original numbers.myshopify.com subdomain still appears in settings and various apps. They wanted to remove or edit this numeric domain.

Key clarifications:

  • The numeric subdomain is a permanent, unique identifier for each Shopify store and cannot be removed
  • It serves essential functions like partner access and store identification
  • Users should set their custom domain as the primary address, which the original poster had already done correctly

Conflicting evidence:
One participant shared a screenshot showing a store without the numeric domain visible, suggesting removal might be possible. Another user proposed this could result from transferring to a new store, though this wasn’t confirmed.

Additional warning:
A separate user strongly advised against purchasing domains directly through Shopify, citing a 40+ hour website outage with neither Shopify nor their third-party domain provider accepting responsibility for resolution.

The discussion remains somewhat unresolved regarding whether the numeric domain can truly be hidden or removed in certain circumstances.

Hi. Not sure if this is in the right spot. I recently transferred my domain to Shopify and everything is working correctly. However under my domains in Shopify, it still shows the numbers.myshopify.com (this was from when I first signed up)

How do I remove that?

In a lot of the apps I use, it has that for the store name and I am not sure to edit or remove it

I believe you can’t change that. Shopify adds that number to make your store unique and to identify. I would reach out to Support and ask, but pretty sure you can’t change it now.

Ok thank you. I thought the numbers would go away once I transferred my domain over. I will contact them

This is correct. That’s the unique “ID” for your Shopify store. It won’t ever go a way. You can just assign your “real” domain name as the Primary address for the store (which it looks like you did).

That number is necessary for all sorts of things (Partner access is just one) so you want to keep it around. :slightly_smiling_face:

I know i am late to the party, but i am searching for the same problem and from another store in my company i know, that it is possible. I just did not figure out how. Here is a screenshot from a shop that is already live and got rid of the numeric domain…
Maybe someone could help.

That’s because they may have transferred the store on a new one. I can help you do that and setup the domains as well.
Just DM me the url of the store.

Do NOT buy your domain directly through Shopify. They simply resell domains from a third party, and when issues arise, they offer no real support. My website has been down for over 40 hours, and Shopify is telling me to contact the third-party provider despite the fact that I purchased the domain through Shopify. Meanwhile, the third party says they cannot assist me and that I must contact Shopify instead.

No one is helping, and my website is still not working. This is completely unacceptable and highly unprofessional from Shopify. Very disappointed.
