Hey there, hoping someone can help with this please?
I have recently updated my theme from debut to dawn and noticed I’m no longer getting gift wrap sales. I had previously edited my theme using the shopify advice to add two options to the checkout but this seems to have gone now we have migrated. When I tried running through the instructions again, it would seem the cart.liquid section i need to add the last part of the code in, isn’t there! I’ve reached out to shopify help centre and they can’t help. If anyone can help with this it would be great.

I’m afraid the guide for adding a gift wrap option is only available for vintage themes (eg. non-sectioned or sectioned) and the instructions do not apply to Online store 2.0 (eg. Dawn theme). At the moment this customization does fall outside the scope of our Theme Support, so you may need to consider hiring a developer to customize your theme. If you need help finding a developer, I’d recommend taking a look at Shopify Experts. Shopify Experts is a directory of certified developers that are experienced in working with custom coding and they’ll be able to create a solution for your theme.
Alternatively, there’s a couple of third-party apps that can allow your store to offer gift wrapping options as well - such as Wrapin - Gift Wrap & Options or Gift Wrap Plus. If you need any assistance with these apps, the app developers are always available to assist you. You can reach out to the developers directly through the contact information found in the Support section of their app pages.

I’m sure this app is very nice but it’s far too expensive unfortunately - at $40 per month, that’s nearly $500 per year - more than you’d spend on a developer with none of the page speed overheads generally introduced by apps accessing their own servers.
I do wonder on what basis shopify make the conscious decision to remove such an obvious feature of an ecommerce site - perhaps to boost app and developer community revenue?

I’ve spoken to our Theme Support team before about customizing the Dawn theme, and because the theme is very new - many of the previously available customizations for vintage themes are not yet available for Online Store 2.0 themes. Nevertheless, I can see how having the gift wrap option is an important function for many of our merchants, like yourself, and I’d be happy to pass this feedback along to our development team.
If you don’t want to use an app for gift wrapping, then you can explore the possibility of customizing the Dawn theme to include a gift wrapping option. I’d recommend getting in touch with our Support team via the Shopify Help Center and we can check if this is something our Theme Support team can help you with. However, if our Theme Support isn’t able to help with this, then you can also consider hiring a developer. If you need help finding a developer, then I’d recommend taking a look at our directory of certified developers on Shopify Experts.

Perhaps the Shopify developers should have waited a bit longer before they released Dawn without must-have features?
However, I suspect that when judging where to stop adding features, Shopify have to strike a balance between doing just enough to attract new users to the Shopify platform whilst maximising revenue from 3rd party apps and developers.
The problem with apps (apart from their cost) is that they add so much code baggage and delay calling back to their own servers that once you added a few essential apps, Google is quickly penalising you for poor mobile page speed.
The more Google do that, the more Shopify will realise they cant rely on apps alone.
Definitely understand that! So Giftship is a multi-tool app, so the basic plan level comes with many more features than just the gift message tool. Rather than split these tools and have a dozen smaller apps, we’ve tried to create an all-in-one gifting app. The benefits of this are a harmonious experience between the tools, and much easier management for the merchants on the back-end.
This type of tool won’t appeal to everyone, if just one of the features that is needed. For those that are using multiple tools however, there is tremendous value here.

I use this feature on my current store and wish to migrate to a 2.0 theme, and this seemingly small feature is very important.

Once upon a time Shopify used to think about the user and more an more Shopify becomes an 90%, 80%, 70% 60% solution with all of the slightly less than basic functionality needing to be fulfilled by apps or private developers.

That being said, if you need a way to add a gift wrap option to your theme for the time being, then you can consider using a third-party app or hiring a developer to help with customizing your theme. Wrapin - Gift Wrap and Options or Gift Wrap Plus can add gift wrap options to your store and they work with the latest themes. I’d love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products do you sell? How often do you receive orders requiring gift wrapping?
I appreciate that you’re trying to find a solution for people, but please stop to realise how ridiculous the current solution is. There is support from Shopify to achieve the objective on legacy themes, but not on Shopify’s own new themes.
Could you imagine if Microsoft said we can help you do that on Windows XP, but if you want to do it on Windows 11 you’ll need to subscribe for a monthly fee or hire a developer? Or Apple said we’ll help you with your iPhone 3 but if you want help with your iPhone 13 you are out of luck!
To be honest, I’m beginning to think that Shopify are loosing touch with their grassroots base and these forums are more and more like a therapy session where everyone comes to talk about their problems rather than someone to get solutions.

Shopify has become a budget airline and I need to pay extra if I want a seat.

I can appreciate where you’re coming from and we do hope to offer the same level of support for our new themes in the near future. While these solutions may not be suitable for everyone, they are recommended working solutions for merchants that are looking for an immediate solution. For example, the Wrapin - Gift Wrap and Options app offers additional functionalities to gift wrapping, such as the ability for customers to include gift messages or choose between free/paid gift wrapping, and they have a very solid rating from their users as well.

Just thought I would let this thread know that the code at the site below works. I just upgraded to theme 2.0 and lost my ability to include slow release fertilizer with the plants that we sell. We get significant income and up-sells from that button and can’t loose it. I purchased the code below for $50 flat and was able to implement it fairly easily based on their instructions. We are using the Athens theme and it dropped right in. It would have taken me quite a long time to code this so it was very much worth it - I’ll now figure out how to include the number of fertilizers based on the items in the cart, since this version defaults to 1 item and doesn’t count the cart like our previous version.
I just wanted to add, for Shopify to note, that I used the gift wrap code on my legacy theme as a shipping upgrade option, allowing our customers to request signature release shipping and add the fee to their cart. It gets used A LOT, especially during the holidays, and with porch pirates on the rise.
