I have a customer who has had a problem with their refund, saying that it has not come through to them and that they want to check the card number used for the purchase. I saw a Shopify response to a customer question saying that merchants cannot view the card number, and only the last 4 digits of this can be seen by them. However hard I have looked, I cannot find where I can see those last 4 digits - but my customer wants them urgently so they can check if it was paid to the correct card. Is that even possible?

If you’re using Shopify Payments, then the last four digits can be viewed by opening the order under “Orders”, scrolling down to the order timeline, then viewing the payment line:
Payments can only be refunded back to the original payment method used at the time of the order. That said, this information may differ if you’re using a third-party payment provider. You can click to expand the payment line to see if you’re able to see any additional information; however, you may need to contact your payment provider directly if you’re unable to find the information you’re after.
