So I recently got involved with a community who teaches you how to sell products from EBay to Australia and although you’re supposed to be able to do this from anywhere in the world, I’ve run into a few problems and they don’t seem to know the answers so I have been forced to come here. Would it be possible to open up a South African Shopify and sell to Australia in AUD or at all? What payment processor do you use because nothing seems to be available here? They are saying that I need a business bank account before I can open Airwallex but I don’t see how that’s possible because it’s simply not available here in SA. This shopify is also supposed to be for an Australian market and not look like a South African Shopify selling to Australia. So I am confused, please advise, help. Tell me if I should just quit while I’m ahead. ![]()
Hi @FVO ,
Thank you for reaching out. Getting set up and selling abroad can be a daunting and confusing process at first but we have plenty of resources that can help guide you through the process. I’d also be happy to help you with some of the questions you’ve posed here.
With some exceptions, Shopify’s platform is uniform across different countries and there is no “Shopify South Africa” or “Shopify Australia” in terms of where you’re selling to. You can use Shopify from South Africa to sell within your own country, to Australia, or the vast majority of the other countries in the world.
Your location mainly dictates what options you have in terms of payment gateways, which varies acorss different countries. A list of payment gateways available in South Africa can be found on our payments page, which includes the likes of 2Checkout and Payoneer Checkout. Once you’ve created a merchant account with the payment gateway of your choice, you’ll be able to accept payments online and start shipping out orders.
Most credit card processors will allow for you to accept payments from international customers, but you may be restricted in terms of only being able to accept payments in your local currency. You can offer customers in Australia the chance to browse your products in AUD using a currency converter.
In terms of the products you’re selling, will you be shipping them from South Africa to Australia yourself? Or would you be using a third-party fulfillment service to ship items to your Australian customers?
