How to set and limit quantity of all products to X automatically?

Topic summary

Goal: Cap total sellable quantity across all variants of each Printful (POD) product (e.g., sell any mix of sizes until 10 total, then auto-sold-out). Printful sets Shopify inventory to “Quantity not tracked,” blocking native stock limits.

Constraints and current reality:

  • Shopify’s limit controls require inventory tracking; POD integrations typically require “not tracked.”
  • Manual per-variant updates aren’t feasible at scale; sellers also want a visible “X left” counter to drive urgency.

Proposed approaches:

  • Bundling: Tie all size variants to a single core SKU so inventory decrements from one pool; workable but setup-heavy (especially for large catalogs; may need CSV bulk work).
  • Operational workaround: Pre-purchase a fixed run from the POD, hold stock, and self-fulfill; suitable for small drops, not for large runs (e.g., 1000-piece collections).
  • Custom/app route: Hire a developer or use third‑party apps.

Latest update:

  • Fusion Inventory app claims to support this pooled-quantity use case and shared a guide. No user confirmations yet.

Status: No confirmed, Shopify-native solution. Discussion remains open. Action items: evaluate Fusion Inventory or custom development; otherwise use the pre-purchase/self-fulfillment workaround for smaller releases.

Hi,

Thanks for your message. Unfortunately that won’t work as the limit is 1000 pieces per collection. I have worked with a Shopify expert and a freelancing company and both were not able to find a solution. I do see on message boards and other places that this is an issue for many POD sellers who want to create simple solutions. I see min/max solutions offered in Apps but that is always to limit within one basket or by customer, while I want to limit total pieces. If you know of anyone who could adapt the code of my store to accomplish that, I would be interested. On the POD site, Printful, it’s not possible to limit. But I would think there must be a way on the Shopify side to limit total quantity once a threshold is reached. Thanks for anyone’s help to try to solve this. I see a lot of other people out there with the same issue, it could help them as well. Thanks.
