we would like to set up a “buy 2 get the 3rd one for free” promo on our site, but only for customers who buy two of the same product variant (same size and flavor) and not just any product off the page.
Is there a way to adjust this?

You can use automatic discounts to offer a “Buy 2 Get 1 Free” promotion. However, as you can only have one automatic discount active, this may not be the best option for restricting products. Instead, I’d recommend using discount codes and creating separate Buy X Get Y discounts for the products you’re promoting. Though customers will need to enter a discount code during checkout, this option does allow you to restrict the discounts to the same products.
Alternatively, you can also use a third-party app that offers quantity breaks or volume discounts to promote and discount products. Bold Quantity Breaks or VolumeBoost allows you to offer discounts based on the quantity the customer buys, so when a customer decides to purchase 6 - You’ll be able to offer 2 for free and the customer doesn’t need to place a separate order. If you need any help with these apps, the app developers are always available to help as well. You can reach out to the developers directly through the contact information found in the Support section of their app’s page.
That being said, I often find myself preferring a different variant (eg. colour or material) when purchasing multiples of the same product (eg. T-Shirts or Socks), so limiting the promotion to the same variant may also act as a deterrent. Was there a specific reason you’d want to limit the promotions to the same variant?
