We have two mailing centres: UK and US. Occasionally a product is out of stock of in one location, but in stock at the other location. This causes an issue when customers try to buy the item; they can add the item to their cart but once they add their address at checkout, they will see an error message saying that a product in their order cannot be shipped to their address.
If they were just trying to buy one item, that message is fine, but if they are trying to buy multiple products and only one is out of stock, is there any way to specify for the customer exactly which product is out of stock?
Right now what happens is they have to get in touch with us, we check their abandoned cart and tell them which item they need to remove to proceed with checkout. This is so clumsy and could be circumvented if Shopify can specify which item is out of stock directly at checkout.
A Shopify Support team member suggested we try putting {{ product }} or {{ product_name }} in the theme language to show the out of stock item, but this did not work:
Yes I have customised the message to say “An item in your cart is out of stock…”, but how can I make it show which specific product is out of stock?
The link included in your message was about translating the checkout into other languages, which is not related to my query. Were you trying to link to info about editing the theme wording?
No, never figured out a solution. The best we could do was customising the theme language to say something along the lines of “An item in your cart is out of stock at your location. Please contact [our email] to help with this order.”
