How to solve issues with the Local Pickup option?

We’d like to use Local Pickup option, but we’re having issues with it. If someone made an order and wanted to pick it up at location 1, but location 1 was out of something in the order, it would still allow the order to go through but would fulfill the out of stock item from location 2 or 3 or whatever. I don’t know why it does that, if someone is picking up I can’t think of a business that would want an out of stock item to be fulfilled from another physical location. Any advice?

Hey, @JasonWeber0 .

Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!

I understand that a customer was able to place an order with an item being fulfilled from a different location. As indicated in our guide for setting up local pickup, Before setting up local pickup, and managing locations, Set locations for order fulfillment priority, online orders can be fulfilled from any location that you have set to fulfill online orders.

Here’s a passage from our guide that explains this process further:

When orders are placed through any online sales channel, they’re assigned to a location where they should be fulfilled from based on the priority list and available inventory. If any location can fulfill the entire order, then the inventory is taken from that location. If no location can fulfill the entire order, then the location with the highest priority oversells the product. Overselling happens when you sell more of a product than the quantity that you have in stock for that product at that location.

With this being said, if the customer only has one item or items from the same location, then the system would only provide that location for pickup. However, with multiple items in the cart, the system would try to fulfill the order with inventory from all locations. Though preventing a location from fulfilling online orders is one option you can consider to stop a particular location from fulfilling online orders, instead you may find that an third-party app, like Store pickup & delivery, might be more suitable for your needs if inventory transferring isn’t an option for your store.

I’d love to hear more about your business! What kinds of products are you selling? Also, are you not open to inventory transfers between locations?
