How does a beginner compete with the brand name clothing stores? Some brand names came across my research, and they all share some similarities. They are either calling for social, environmental causes or they simply portrait a life style or make a statement out of their garments.
It reveals some patterns, and I wonder what research or business plans someone with limited experience can take on in their earlier stage of planning.
Hi @WingSpan! You don’t beat big clothing brands by trying to be bigger — you win by getting more specific.
Big brands sell to everyone.
Small brands win by serving one niche deeply (dog owners, coffee lovers, gamers, etc.).
For research, start with:
-
Who is this clothing for?
-
What do they care about? (identity, lifestyle, belief)
-
Where do they hang out online? (Facebook groups, Reddit, TikTok)
Your early business plan doesn’t need to be complicated.
Just define the audience, the message, and how you’ll reach them.
People don’t buy shirts — they buy the statement the shirt makes. Hope this helps!
Hey @WingSpan
Could you share a link to your store?
So we could see what could be your strengths and maybe some things you could focus on.
