How to update Dawn theme without losing custom features?

Hi,

I based our store theme on Dawn. At the time is was Dawn 6.0.2.

I added a reasonable amount of customisation and edited parts of the liquid code.

Dawn is frequently updated and 70+% of the features that I added through liquid edits have now been added as Dawn features. There are also other nice things in later versions of Dawn such as focal points on pictures and now scheduling gift card delivery etc. As of yesterday Dawn 11.0.0 has been released.

I’m wondering about starting over and using the native features in Dawn rather than my code. This however leave the other features that I’ve added, which I’d need to add in again.

My question is: How can I best add/edit the theme such that I don’t get left behind with future releases?

For example, I see I can now add custom CSS on a page or product template, etc. This custom CSS stays isolated in its own file meaning that the theme can be upgraded.

I want an upgradable Dawn, that still includes my custom liquid.

How do I do this?

Hey,

I would recommend to create a copy of the theme, and then update the copy, so you are safe.

To see your new theme, click actions > preview.

Don’t delete the old theme so you can reference and pass the code to the new one.
