How to upsell an additional shipping charge - is it an app?

Hey. We sell mixed carts to customers of products that are in stock and products that are pre-order. We have free shipping over £150.

We would like an upsell to come up at the checkout that says if you have a mixed cart why not add an extra postage and then we will ship what we have in stock now straight away and then the rest when the pre-order items come in to us. Any app recommendations or ways we can achieve this please?

HI @linzal

Here are a few recommendations for managing mixed carts with in-stock and pre-order products on Shopify, while offering free shipping over £150:

  1. Install the PreOrder Now app https://apps.shopify.com/preorder-now which allows you to:
  • Automatically replace “Out of Stock” buttons with “Pre-Order Now” buttons
  • Display alerts when a customer has both pre-order and in-stock items in their cart
  • Apply automatic discounts to pre-orders to incentivize customers
  • Collect partial payments upfront and retrieve the balance before shipping
  • Add stylish “Pre-Order” badges over product images on product pages
  • Send automated “Back in Stock” email notifications to interested customers
  1. Configure the app settings:
  • Enable the “Mixed Cart Warning” to alert customers with mixed carts
  • Set up “Pre-Order Discounts” to offer exclusive deals on pre-orders
  • Customize the “Pre-Order Now” button and badge styling to match your theme
  • Optionally enable “Partial Payments” to collect a deposit at time of pre-order
  • Tag specific products for pre-order if you don’t want it enabled store-wide
  1. When a customer with over £150 in their cart goes to checkout:
  • If they have all in-stock items, they’ll get free shipping as usual
  • If they have a mixed cart, the “Mixed Cart Warning” will appear
  • You can offer them the option to pay extra shipping to split the order
  • This way you can ship in-stock items immediately and pre-orders later
  1. When pre-order items are back in stock:
  • The app will automatically send “Back in Stock” notifications to customers
  • You can then charge the remaining balance and fulfill the pre-orders

So in summary, I think the PreOrder Now app provides the key features needed to smoothly handle mixed carts and allow pre-orders while still offering free shipping promos. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @linzal ,
What do you mean by an upsell? Do you want to show a special shipping rate along with the regular shipping rate when the cart contains mixed products? If yes, that can be achieved with our app ShipMagic.

Hi Sniper2804, thanks for the reply.

So the customer goes to checkout with a mixed cart and then either a pop up appears or at the bottom of the cart/checkout page, the customer will see an additional product they can add which is an additional shipping fee so that we can split their order and ship the in stock items straight away

Thanks! This is also there, when you state:

What if the customers cart is under £150 and is still a mixed cart, could we also offer the option to pay extra shipping and split the order?

Thx

@linzal

What you can try :

  1. Use separate shipping profiles for in-stock and pre-order products. This will automatically add up the shipping rates at checkout if the cart contains products from both profiles.

  2. Use an app like SplitOrder to automatically split mixed carts into separate orders based on product attributes like in-stock vs pre-order. The app can route the split orders to different fulfillment locations.

  3. For orders over a certain threshold (e.g. £150), you can display a “Mixed Cart Warning” at checkout if the cart contains both in-stock and pre-order items. Give the customer an option to pay extra shipping to split the order so in-stock items ship immediately and pre-orders ship later.

  4. For orders under your free shipping threshold with mixed in-stock and pre-order items, you can also provide an option to the customer to pay additional shipping to split the order into in-stock and pre-order shipments.

  5. Use an app like Pre-order Manager Pro (see the post attached below) which can automatically split the pre-order items into a separate order to be fulfilled later while the in-stock items ship first. You can configure different pre-order shipping options and costs.

In summary, the key is to either 1) Set up separate shipping profiles so the rates are automatically combined, 2) Use an app to automatically split mixed carts based on rules, or 3) Provide clear options to the customer at checkout to pay extra shipping if they want the order split for faster in-stock fulfillment. An app will provide the most automated solution, but you can achieve this with native Shopify features as well.
