How to use "Category Metafield" as one of the filters on Collections page?

I am trying to display Category Metafield (not product metafield) as one of the filters to be shown on collections page.

Reference:

I don’t want to use Product Metafield as that will create variants. I want to show a filter that shows different color palettes that are part of a phone case design, and then show it as one of the filters on the search & discovery app so people can mix and match the type of color palette they want.

I tried making a custom product meta field and named it Color(s) so I can manually add it to search & discovery app but then it just shows the list of color names and not the color that is associated with the color name

Reference:

I am using Shopify Premium Theme Pipeline. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated!

I also added an extra product meta field from Shopify product taxonomy called “Case Color” which felt like the right category to display the colors but its not showing up on the product page as it’s just not assigned to any product category on Shopify end

I am also looking for a solution here as i want to display the colours by linking the metaobject as per the help guide, however when i create the metafield and then try to link the meta object, it tells me i have not created any.

I dont want to duplicate the metaobjects if i can help it.

Maybe I have a solution. We set up our store for various reasons with every color of the main product family as an individual product. I’ve set up our Color Category Metafield options to reference every color in our catalog. When I go to, say “Bubble Gum product” I choose the bubble gum color hex option in the category color metafield select. then I click “add variant” and choose color option and link to that option. Now, technically this is creating a variant, but there’s only 1 and in our product template I am not showing “variations” block so it is the same shopping experience so far. I need to see how it affects other workflows, but…this did solve the filter and search app and collection template filter pulling in colors.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

If this isn’t possible I’m struggling to understand the purpose of the Shopify categories and metafields.

I’m using the Shopify search and discover app and there seems to be no way to add category metafilds as filters. I don’t want to have to create duplicate metafields if possible.

Cheers Dan

Shopify Support told me the update to support Category-based Metafields in Search & Discovery and in automated collections was supposed to release mid-August but it’s the beginning of Sept and no update. We’re running into issues based on this because we went ahead and implemented Category-based Metafields as Shopify recommended.

Here’s what the help documentation now says.

I haven’t heard any updates yet.

Very strange, the shopify category metafields seem pointless at this stage.
