I am currently using XCart v5 and considering moving to Shopify.
XCart has an app which will let me list files for download on a product page, eg PDF datasheets and manuals. Each time a visitor downloads the file it is recorded with a timestamp.
This information is very useful for determining interest in a particular product.
I am looking for a similar app for Shopify. If would also be useful if the file can be tagged so that Google can index it for SEO.

This sounds more like a Google Analytics function than anything else.
If you use Google Analytics to track file downloads you’ll get a bit more information too, the source they arrived on the website from etc.
The other thing you could do is use the free Digital Downloads app from the Shopify app store here:

And make the datasheets and manuals free downloads?
But from what you’ve said - I think Google Analytics for tracking these kinds of events is more appropriate.

Thanks, but that will make my workflow more complicated. In XCart, the information is available in the admin|product page. I want to make it easy for a customer to download the data; going through the shopping cart, even for free downloads will send many elsewhere. I am assuming that the digital downloads app will require this?
I will bear this in mind though if nothing else surfaces.
